BROKEN the FEATURE FILM - TEST SCENE w/MOVIE STARS

Hey Guys,

Now don't get excited but we shot a few scenes last summer for the feature film version of BROKEN. This scene stars the lovely Paula Garces (Harold and Kumar, The Shield) and Diego Serrano (24, Arli$$). It was shot on the DVX 100a 24p in a day, with a crew made up of mostly students, except for all the department heads.

Goto: http://www.alexferrari.com/work.html and click on "Soulless" (the new name for the BROKEN feature film. Check it out and let me know what you think.

As for updates on the feature version:

We were approached by a ton of hollywood studios and producers but the script Jorge and I wrote was a bit ambitious ($35-$50 million to do it right). The studios weren't willing to give a "first time" director a shot on such a big budget (totally understandable). That's why I wrote my next project "Red Princess Blues" for a $1-$2 million budget in mind, much more doable. As for BROKEN aka SOULLESS, only time will tell if we will ever get to make it.:crybaby:

Anyway gotta move forward. Let me know what you think.

Nice job, I really liked it. Writing and acting were both really good. It's too bad you aren't making the full thing right now because I'd definately watch it. Keep us updated on your other projects...definately would like to see them.

this is inspirational to me. i really thank you for posting this the work speaks for itself. I've been doing alot of test shots with my dvx100b an i hope to be able to duplicate half the product you are putting out. Thanks Again!

I liked everything but the very first shot looked a bit too indie, maybe too pulled back or something. Great otherwise.

I do have questions... I've seen your short, and I did notice you shot with the camera with very little additional equipment. And what I mean by that is, you didn't use a 35mm adapter, and you even used the mattebox that came with the camera. Which I respect especially when seeing the results you yielding with CC and editing. Did you approach this version in a similar way? What did you do different? Thanks for the time, and what I've seen looks great.

Paula Garces + shower scene = mega blockbuster

What are those studio types thinking?

Your clip seemed very filmic to me. What are you doing to your footage besides CC to get that look?

Thanks everyone for the kind words.

I did approach it in the same way. We used the Panasonic Wide-angle adapter only. Only thing different is I was only using one camera and most of the crew were students.

With this film, after broken's success, has funding been easier to secure? I understand the style your going for but are you saying this scene is going to be in the final version of the film or are you planning to reshoot this scene? Re edit? If your planning to reshoot are you thinking of shooting with the stock DVX100 or given the recent advances in camera tech (i.e. HVX200 and the prosumer HDV camera's) are you going to shoot with a different camera? I thought it looked good and the pacing was good, keep up the rock-Adam

How does the wide angle adapter compare to using the camera's squeeze widescreen?

It doesn't! The wide angle adapter opens up you view coming into the camera. The squeeze only gives you an anamorphic image with the image already coming into the cam.

Good Luck!

ok. I finally get it. i misread (or mis-thought) that you said you used the ana adapter. but now it makes sense that you used the wide angle... did you use squeeze mode with it? or just letterbox? because it really helped with making the field of view better with the 16:9

I shot 4x3 and re-formatted the shot in post, then add a letterbox in post. I always shot like that so I can get the most power to reframe shots and am not stuck with a letterbox or squeeze. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

The DVD comes with the three hours of special features and the color correction area has a 17 min tutorial and another discussion on How to make DV look like film. We have sold a ton and everyone seems to really get a bunch out of it.

Good Luck and thanks for the interest.

i thought the whole appeal of "broken" was that it proved you could make a good looking horror film on the cheap. what gives?
