24p and 30p

Hi
Just upgraded my Panny gs400 to a DVX and must say I'm lovin it.
As my first post I was wondering if you can mix 24p and 30p in the same project?
I now only use ulead VS9 and I know you can't do it on that.
I downloaded the trial of Ulead MediaStudioPro and it has a 24p time line option, but I've got lot's of stock 30p tape I could throw in here and there.
Sorry, but I'm new to the whole 24p thing.
I searched the board but couldn't really find anything on this.

Thanks

Well, I guess you could shoot 24p (not pA) on the DVX which is 24p that can be edited on a 60i timeline. Slap that and the 30p on a 60i timeline and it should work, but they will look different. You must render to a regular 60i .avi if you do this though, as if you render to 30p or 24p one or the other type of your footage will try and conform to each other.

24p and 30p don't transform into the other well at all.

is that still the same train of thought for all 30p or just the 30p from smaller cams i ask cuz i have the dvc80 but my friend just ordered his 100b and i was wondering how well will the video from my 80 mesh with his 100b?

24PA needs to be editing on a 24.98 fps timeline.

24P edits on a regular 29.98 timeline.

So... as long as your friend doesn't shoot 24pa, then they'll work well together. Might not look the same if one's at 24p and one's at 30p, but they'll work together.

Thanx brwn
on my 80 i have a polarizer and black pro mist on the lens and warm cards to w/b with, ive also set my settings according to what ive read on how most you dvx users set up your 100's well atlest the settings i do have anyway i know the dvx has so much more well anyway back to my question, with the amo ive armed myself with how close did i get to the 24 look that way maybe ive closed the gap between the dvx and dvc? cuz as you say Might not look the same if one's at 24p and one's at 30p.

Why does 24Pa have to be edited on a 23.98 timeline? I was under the assumption that it's all recorded at 30 frames on tape but the difference between P and Pa is how it decides what frames to discard if editing in 23.98.
If it stays on 30 frames through to the end (delivery medium) I thought they can all mix together you just get different looks between the 24p/pa and the 30 p shots.

I'm new so just looking for clarification.

Thanks,
DDP

Thanks for the input!!
Also, how would the dvx squeeze mode render out with the panny 400 true 16:9.
Is that possible?
I would try all this myself but I just got the dvx 2 days ago and I'm working 14hr days and have been asked to do a friends wedding this weekend.
Ideally, this is how I'd like to do it. Shoot the ceremony with both cameras in 30p.
When the lights go down shoot the reception in 24p with a well lit "Best Wishes" couch shot in 30p interspersed. I just love the richness of 24p.
Or - just shoot the whole damn thing in 30p?

Personally, I find the day of a wedding (or any important shoot. ie- no do-overs) a really bad time to try something new or experiment.

Then again, no guts no glory..... and no great stories to tell on dvxuser about the time you tried to........

It doesn't *have* to be edited on a 23.98 timeline. It can be edited on a 60i timeline too. But if you're going to be using a 23.98 timeline, you'll get slightly better results if you'd shot in 24pA.

Exactly correct. But if that's your plan, just be aware that you'd get *slightly* smoother 24p from using the normal 24p mode, rather than 24pA.
