Lexar shuips new solid-state Express Card Drives

I saw this announcement and was just curious as to how these cards could be used in the HVX workflow. Look at the prices compared to P2 Cards.

Models with 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB of space are said to be available today with the former two being priced at $130 and $200; no price has yet been listed for the 16GB product.

Just a thought, couldn't a Cineporter type box (if priced right) be built so we could swap out a couple of these? I know they'd fit nicely inside my MBP. Cheers.

$200 for 8 gig?!?! This will work in the Sony cam I'm assuming?

This certainly ought to shake things up.

Raw capacity is one thing, speed is another. Unless they can move data in and out at 100Mb/s it's a moot point where comparisons to P2 are concerned.

Those aren't "SxS" cards. Do we know that the XDCAM EX system is going to work with off-the-shelf ExpressCards, or will it need the specific SxS cards they're introducing for it? These off-the-shelf cards max out at 250mbps, whereas the SxS cards run at 800mbps.

I was told by the Sony rep at NAB they were employing "Open Architecture" for their express card allowing the use of any third party cards.

So you "just" need an SxS Card when they come out and one of these little things here:

And the HVX can be used with much cheaper and even faster cards, right.

Panasonic, hello?

Peter

I do not think this will work. The sustaned write speed I found was in the 150Kbs. Not quite fast enough.vSo where is the sustained write speed at 100Mbs? with overhead? Where is the MetaData handling and LSI going to take place?

Sorry guys I don't think this is going to work.

Best,

Jan

The camera expects to talk to a P2 device using a specific protocol, and popping some other card into the camera -- with or without a PCMCIA adapter -- is not going to make it compatible.

The SxS card that will come out with this new camera will have a speed of 800MBit/sec. which is faster than what you can get with a P2 Card. It might be worth looking into it.
