Dolly ?'s

Was at Home Depot and saw the ply and fiberboard. Which is better? The fiber board is lazer straight, and very sturdy. Plywood is good, but most of the pieces were bowed. How do you correct for this?

Which wheels setups? The KILLER CAMERA RIGS design? Or the one with offset wheels mounted on angle iron?

Where is the best place to get wheels? Can you just buy a cheapy skateboard from Target and use those? Abec 1 or 7 bearings?

I picked up some 10 inch pneumatic tires from harborfreight on sale and was wondering what about a dolly made with one of these. Any designs for these out there?

thanks

Plywood, plywood, plywood! And get the tickest you can find. As far as the plywood being bowed, you might want to try a different lumber yard. Fiberboard or particleboard or MDF (I think it's called) will fall apart with a lot less weight put on it because the bits of wood aren't nearly as long as in plywood.

I'm not sure about skate wheels.

Fiberboard sucks.

I bought a sheet of 3/4" plywood and doubled it up and screwed it together to make it 1.5" (if I did it again, I'd add some liquid nails too...) Solid, and relatively lightweight. I bring it to shoots where we've had a chapman or fisher dolly and we've opted for it for scenes where we didn't want to take the dolly up flights of stairs or if we needed the low profile.

I did from walmart. So damn problematic I ended up getting some real skateboard wheels from a skateboard shop. the cheap ones from target will get you there cheap, but you will end up buying real wheels after a while anyways...

Good info......I will check the one skate shop here in town.

How about info on the pneumatic tire dolly. Any one ever build one?

If any of you guys live near each other you should get together on a sheet of 13-15 ply baltic birch... it's voidless and way better then regular plywood. It comes in 5'x5' sheets... and while it's probably twice the cost of regular plywood... it's stronger and looks nice... and you can get 4 squares out of the sheet.

You have to go to a WOOD store to get it though... locally we have a place called Saint Charles Hardwoods... trust me, if you live in a city you have a place like this in your area also... every $1M+ house built needs materials from one of these suppliers.

Yes, Matt is correct. Looking at HomeDepot lumber made my eyes cross. Its tough to find anything straight there.
