Do it your self 3000w light kit for under $275.00

Very tempting......I am going to primarily be using CFL's, am currently building a softbox and chinese lanterns, but with the price of that barndoor set up, I might buy it.

Are these barndoor fixtures your design? Can you take the colored gels off and put on some CTO's etc.?

Also, where can you get the twin lights with the trim plate like the one you have pictured? The ones at HD and lowes look different. Can you still mount them on those?

Thanks.

Hey Fenigirl,

Hey Fenigirl,

No I did not design the barndoor's themselves. I simply put together a do it yourself lighting assembly using a HomeDepot work light kit and a Folodiox Barn Door. If you are looking for an inexpensive light kit and are reasonabley handy you can build this kit for under $275.00 consisting of 2 sets of 500w light kits, 2 stand alone 500w lights, and 2 Folodiox Barn Doors. Keep in mind that these are work lights and they run hotter than the more ideal movie lights like Cool Light and other brands, but if your in a financial crunch you still can get the job done with this set up. The link for the barndoor is

I believe they offer an asortment of different filters. My order came with 3 gels, and a honeycone filter.

Hey guys,

I've been playing around with this assembly and I got to say that for some reason it seems like before I added these accessories the fixture gave off more heat. It still gets hot but it doesn't give off the same amount of heat to the surrounding envirnment.

I'm stumped. Maybe because the blacks of the barndoors and filter contain the heat. Also I guess by them being aluminum. I don't know, but they are really manageable.

I have to say that the heat hasn't really peeked out here in Maryland as of yet. When it does I give some feed back.

But, I have to say as an alternative its a great light setup.

ifownlee41nite@mac.com brilliant setup! Is there anyway to dim lights like these? They seem to put out a whole lot of light and if I could dim them that would be great. You should packem up and sell them for $400. :) The IFowFlo

Sorry for the dissappearing act. I have been very busy on projects, and my daytime gig.

I haven't tried attaching a dimmer to it, but I'm sure that would be very simple to do.

I'll try it out and get back to you on it.

Thanks for the comment.
