Hi,
I know this camera can accept MiniDV tapes, but can i only record SD footage to a miniDV tape, or am i able to record HDV video to a miniDV tape as well, or do i need an HDV miniDV tape to record HDV footage?

Thanks!

You can record HDV onto any miniDV tape. The better tapes are recommended to help avoid dropouts, but by design HDV is meant to be recorded on miniDV or HDV tapes. HDV tapes are completely compatible with miniDV, just engineered to higher tolerances to hopefully prevent dropouts from occurring.

I started using the pro tapes $10, then went to another "pro" tape $5.99, then finally the cheapest $2.35 ea. To be honest, I can't tell the difference. I've gotten drop out on all three types.

I've had my HD100U for almost a year and I've had the most success with Panasonic DV tapes. Sony and JVC tapes had way too many dropouts. I also make sure to use a head cleaning tape after shooting 2 tapes worth of material. This is a great camera, but it seems to be quite finnicky.

Typically the dropouts look like a row or two that tears for a couple frames. Nothing too serious but it definitely screws you when you're capturing footage into your NLE.
