Scan Lines Video Massacre – PLEASE HELP!!!

All,

I am having a serious issue with lines in my video project. You can view the project at:

www.mattooley.com/decora.mov

I shot the interview on HVX200 at HD and made the photo comps in Adobe After Effects (exported them at 10B, uncompressed). The project looks great on the internet Quicktime video, which you can see at the address above. Infact, it looks great until I burn it to dvd and play it on the big screen (52" LCD) – which is where it is destined to play!!!

The problem is that there are wicked lines in the video.... The lines appear all throughout the footage (even in the HVX200-shot interview, not just the AE comps). I have tried running a deinterlacing effect over the video, but this only helps a tiny, tiny bit.

The lines mostly appear on the edges of cabinets, etc when the camera view is panning or tilting.

Please help me out with this if you have any idea what this may be. You could be the one to help save my butt!!!

Thanks in advance.

Matt

Sounds like your workflow doesn't consistently treat the source material as progressive.

Being that you haven't said exactly what resolution and frame rate you shot at, it is hard to say exactly what it could be. The HVX200 can shoot in a multitude of HD formats and frame rates. Also you say you export the AE files as 10 bit uncompressed. What are you exporting/importing them to? What NLE are you using? What timeline are you cutting in? How are you creating DVD's? Could this be a field dominance issue? It's a little hard to help when all the info you give is basically "my DVD's dont look right on a big screen TV! Try explaining your workflow in more detail and you may get a better response.

The video was shot at DVCPRO HD 720/30P. The AE files were exported 10 bit uncompressed and then imported in to a Final Cut sequence with the following settings: Frame size - 720x486; Aspect Ratio - CCIR 601 NTSC (40:27); PAR - NTSC - CCIR 601 / DV (720X480); Field Dominance = Lower (even); Compressor quality = Uncompressed 10-bit 4;2;2

Sorry i wasn't specific enough. Hopefully this will help out.

The Field Dominance is going to be a problem -- it implies interlaced material, which the 720/30P material is not.

i realize the 720/30P material is not interlaced, however, i am editing it in an SD sequence... doesn't this downconvert it and thereby interlace it?

basically i am wondering if there is any way to remedy this problem.

sorry for my ignorance, but i'm fairly new to HD. i just want to figure out how to get through this issue.

thanks.

FYI - in your opener, your animated stroke leaves the widesceen edges, while the text/text effects do not. The second bit of text also leaves the widescreen. Not sure if this was intended or not.

I am exporting my final sequence from Final Cut as a Quicktime file.

At that point, I have gone about getting the material to DVD in a few different ways:

1. I have simply taken the QT file and burned it to DVD in DVD Studio Pro

2. I have also tried to take that same file and run it through Compressor at DVD quality.

Is this the info you need?

I think the only way to fix it is to re-import into FCP without the Field Dominance flag on.

You might want to ask this over at www.lafcpug.org in the Cafe' LA forum.

Make sure to have the exact specs of the source footage.

Exact specs of your timeline settings including frame dimensions and compression settings.

Let them know which version of Final Cut.

Did you just drop the HD footage into an SD timeline preset and it auto scaled the footage to fit?

Sounds like a field issue but not sure.

I bet you're struggling w/a raster size issue. If some components are one size, and others go off the screen, then the MPEG encoder doesn't know what to do, so begins stretching the middle of the frame or all of it, so that the field order is off in PARTS of the frame. Go thru your project and make sure it's all 720x480 before going out to DVDSPro, BitVice, Squeeze, et.al. even the precomputes, wipes, dissolves. THEN report back. Good luck.

DVD is 720x480 - just for grins -
go back to your AE Project -
Set-up the project as 720x480 not 720x486 -
Re-render as Progressive not interlaced....
In you FCP project - set interlacing to none -

Then render the test section and export for DVD....

If it is destined for a 52" LCD/Plasma etc then you
really want a progressive DVD anyway.....

Plus I would re-think it and make it 16:9 anyway so
it will fill up the LCD/Plasma 52" screen....
