Core 2 Duo Build Project: 2007

Thanks. The difference might actually be in the fans if there really is a difference. Seems like the first linked version gets bad reviews in the cooling department. I'm going to look into them, though.

Edit: Yeah I think that was actually right. That PUKE GREEN one you have actually seems to run cooler than the other, because no one's reporting heat problems and be sure that on NewEgg... everyone reports heat problems.

TY fo that link. I'm going to price it out to see if it's plausible at the time of order for me.

Kholi,

What's your username on the OSx86project site? I'd like to follow your progress there when you go into the OS portion of your build.

I'll be running a lot of the same software you're intending to run - LightWave's new renderer kicks ass! Though it still sucks for character animation. :(

Curious to see how FCS2 will run on it. :D

Khid on the OSx86 Project site. I've only posted asking questions so far. Will start my build thread there soon and, when I get my website up this coming month, it'll be there on the personal segment.

And yes, Lightwave now kicks ass. Along with Softimage XSI. I dig more into Cinema4D than anything else, but I do have those programs (Thanks to work) and plan on using them.

I have yet to recieve Boujou but I hope to get deep into motion tracking.

Motion trackers:
I've messed with all of them, and taught Matchmover at Academy of Art College.

How much is Boujou these days? List time I priced it, it was upwards of $10k ! Then along came SynthEyes, you ever heard of them? Phenomenal program at $399. http://www.ssontech.com/

I *love* matchmoving CG against live plates. Haven't done it in a while, and am looking at getting syntheyes.

Oh yeah dude. Syntheyes is great. It's on my program list. Going to put down on it realllllyyyy soon. It works with C4D pretty well from the demo, Boujou seems to offer a few more options.

I think it's Boujou Bullet that's the cheaper one. But still effective.

Jason what kind of drives did you put in the enclosure?
Have you checked for average transfer speeds?

I am curious to see how fast the RAID0 controller is.

Another question is (for me because I don't deal with Raid setups) -- Raid0 or 1? And why?

Edit: And instead of SATA, as a thought, what if you setup an external Raid via FIrewire 800 or the lower 400?

What kinda performance decrease can you expect from something like that in comparison to the SATA setup?

RAID0 (stripping) Speed. It is where you ask for the stream of information to be split in two so as to double the speed at which the file can be written or read. Just like the PCMCIA enclosure of P2 cards split the stream into four SD cards. You use this for editing normally cause it is faster... depending on the controller you will get either just a bit more than the speed of one of the drives or closer to 195% of the speed of both drives put together... my NoBo allows for my perpendiculars which give about 68MB/s individually, to function in a RAID0 with an average of 133MB/s... the DS3's on-board gave me only 86MB/s.

RAID1 (mirror) Safety. It is where you set up your drives so that you only see the space of the capacity of one of them individually, and that is because everything you save will be saved in both drives, creating two identical copies. This is usually done on the field for redundancy in case one HDD fails, so as not to loose your data. I did not try a RAID1 setup with the on-board ports in the DS3.

Yeah, see, my intention is RAID1 for failure. I'm really afraid of hard-drive failure as it's happened to me about three times and it REALLY sucks. I can deal with the Speeds being slower.

I can probably also deal with cutting from a FW800 raid setup as well. I'm working on efficiency right now in the shopping list, which means finding out the best way to shift around the money so I can get a raid setup and an external HDD for on-the-set purposes.

Thanks for the info.

I ordered the Gateway 24
645 J&R

makes me wish the 22" were gateways too...

I am wondering if I also should get that enclosure..? But I need to know some average transfers...

I have the 22" Gateway. O_o; Nothing wrong with it. I also want the 24" as well, though. In fact: I need the 24" LOL.

I am wondering about the green enclosure that Ramsey has listed. But my thought is that I don't want to go the SATA route considering I have all those open FIREWIRE ports on the extra PCI slot.

So here's what I'm looking at as an acceptable alternative:

Firewire 400/800

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822110002
+ 250gb 7200.10 RPM 16mb Cache HDD x 2 = 360.00

SATA

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816111020
Comes with 2 160gb 7200RPM 8mb cache Western Digital = 239.94 + 11.14 shipping.

The second ain't so bad considering that it comes with two drives at that price. But those drives run 53.99 a piece new, meaning the Esata enclosure is a rough 140.00. I'd rather buy the enclosure and put that 100.00 to 2 x 250gb HDD's instead if I were to go with this raid solution.

And you also have to Add on a Raid Controller card, because it's not internal.

RAMSEY'S SOLUTION

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822102001 - 129.99 *not in stock + 2 x 250gb Seagates = 300.00

And it comes with an eSata PCI-E card. Not bad at all.

I'm literally just thinking about the fact that I only have 3 PCI slots and one is going to Firewire Controller, Another to P2 slots, and that leaves one open for Gigabit Ethernet or eSATA. One or the other.

If I had another slot I'd be fine with the eSATA. Tis not the case.

I'm leaning heavily toward a FW800 Raid solution + A Seagate FreeAgent 500gb external for file transport.

I am considering cancelling a WD 1TB iteration with FW400 and FW800 which I can get with a discount for $300 but I'd get 80MB/s max.. Unless FW400 is lower than that cause that's what I got... no 800 ports.

If you are going to get Ramsey's solution which I am looking at... spend an extra $100 and get two 500 perpendiculars... you double your storage and you can edit from them if need be... even in RAID1 you'd get about 68MB/s. Also I love that it comes with a eSATA card even if it is PCI.

I'd throw the 500s in the Case and use two of my 320's in the enclosure.

One guy did complain about heat, but he didn't say he had an actual problem... One guy said he used a pair of 750s with no problems. There really shouldn't be a limit...

USLatinContent: Oh no, I wasn't trying to attack you! I'm a gamer and an overclocker myself so I was just refering to people like my friends. ;) They go off any buy 1KW PSUs! Sorry, looking back I realize how that sounded pretty harsh but I wasn't intending for that to be a personal attack! Doh!

Good point about the RAM. Truthfully, I've never overclocked my memory that high so I can't really comment. I know people who overclock their RAM without cooling but you're absolutely right - 20$ - why not? Better safe than sorry, especially for that price!

Kholi - You, of course, certainly know your needs better than I do! Going for the 600 watt PSU shouldn't be much of an issue for most people. I've just been on a quiet PC kick lately (trying to build a high end PC that's almost silent) so having the PSU fan come on from heat really adds to the noise. For most people this won't be much of an issue.

The reason I ask about the add in cards is that you can get a 650i motherboard that comes standard with dual gigabit LAN, firewire etc and are designed specificially for overclocking at not much more (if at all). Run a search at newegg for 650i. Also google some of the boards to read the reviews. Might be worth looking into and could save you some money/power.

The 8800s dropped in price? Wow, I wonder what spurred that? I know Intel just recently dropped prices on their entire Core 2 line too... Guess it's a great time to be building a PC!

As for RAID, an eSata raid 5 setup with 4-5 drives would absolutely rock! :D

EDIT: More to come on the PSU stuff you brought up USLatinContent - soon!

Yesss. The Q6600 Dropped to about 500 I think. Not bad! But considering by the end of the year, Native Quads will be here. We're talking less voltage for more power And probably as much as the current QX6700. HMMMM

On the motherboard issue, you're absolutely right. if I could go with the 650i or 680i SLI boards I honestly would, but considering the project I'm building it would be more headache than it's worth to be honest. Otherwise, i wouldn't do less than a 680i SLI board to be honest.

Good thing about my PSU switch, though, is that it is quieter and cools much better than the GameXStream I originally planned on.

Your advice is great, though. I do want a quiet system, and I hope my parts aren't gonna be too freakin noisey.

Latin: I honestly think I'm gonna go with the FW800 setup and save myself a PCI slot for later. The SATA sounds nice, but I think once it's in I'll never have a complaint about editing from the FW ports.

The Gigabit Connection is essential to my HYDRA plans, and should have a slot reserved specifically for that.

I'm also wondering about which size HDDs to throw in the case and the Raid setup. 250's in the CPU, 500 stripped/mirrored in the raids? I'm tacking on a bit more money than I initially planned, but it's probably worth it in the end.

Shaw dude, I wasn't "attacking you back", that's just the way I talk and since you spoke freely I jumped in, we were on the same boat.

Kholi the MoBo that Shaw is talking about is the way to go... Put simply... GET THE ASUS NOT THE DS3... ok? That is a must! TRUST ON THIS!
I completely forgot about it... it is the P5N-E SLI and it uses the NVIDIA 650i chipset which is superior... but take a look at the ports to see how to configure your expansion cards and all...

Here is a great thread about how to OC it...

http://www.overclock.net/intel-motherboards/146744-asus-p5n-e-sli-650i-thread.html

I just read your last post... ok well you are the only one who knows what you need so go for the DS3...

For the internal HDDs I'd say the 320GB are the absolute sweet spot for bang for your capacity... but if you can get at least a set of two 500's to RAID0 you'll be glad later on when you fill em' up with footy... use them as your source... then get two more HDDs.... a smaller 320GB for your OS and storage o' stuff and a second 320GB for your render target... that will speed up your renders... also between the two 320's you'll have plenty of space to create temporary backups of what
's most important to you shot wise...

I say 320's instead of smaller cause they are giving them away at the egg for $80!?!? awesome deal! The 500's might not be worth it if you want to save $$$ cause with two in RAID0 you get an actual 598GC which fit over 15HS of 720p/1080i PN

BTW if you get the Hydra I will come over and kick you in the chins, lol

Oh certainly! I never took your post that way at all. Just wanted to clarify my own. :)

I know all about the Asus P5B boards y0. You'll have to understand that I have a very VERY specific reason for choosing the DS3 board. Trust me on that.

If I wanted a Normal PC, I would've already had one. >=)

And yeah, I'm getting HYDRA for sure. I'm preparing for it right now.
