Is there any way to shoot the sun?

I'm shooting a feature out in the desert on the DVX100b in about a month, and am wondering if there's any way I can get some cutaway shots of the sun without it damaging the camera? Is there a filter I can use?
Thanks

Sure... a strong ND filter should do the trick.

I've shot the sunrise with just the onboard ND filter and it turned out great. Desert sun high in the sky? I'd invest in a stronger ND...

You're safe to shoot the sun if it doesn't hurt your eyes to look at it; sunrise and sunset are no problem. Noonday? That's a problem, but with enough ND you should be able to get it.

Barry, when you are saying "you are safe to shoot the sun", you mean that dvx won't be hurt or get broken by the sun rays? So it's electronically safe?

The way I look at it, if my eyes can look at the sun (such as during sunrise/sunset) then it's safe for the camera's lens/CCDs to look at it. But if looking at the sun at noontime is so bright that it threatens to fry my retinas, then I wouldn't want to expose the camera to that same brightness either.

It may be safe to do so, but I don't really want to find out and the owner's manual (IIRC) specifically says not to do it. So I use the eyeball rule as a guideline.

Why do not use thousands of special effects in gamma format? I think is the safest way to get it.
Just my two cents...
