Record uncompressed 14-bit (4:4:4) on your HVX200

Proof = inside pudding

But with all of this shaping up and the track record of Andromeda: for under 10 grand we'd have a cam capable of shallow DOF, 2k imaging, uncompressed output, RAW.... If the specs don't lie and it shows up in the image it should look quite a bit better than SI-2k... Hell if it looks the same that'd be great!

At this point you really can compete with the big boys (although I think the stoch HVX200 already can!). Price is no longer the barrier for quality. Experience and artistic ability will become the true force behind our salaries, not that we just own the equipment....

It's pretty cool... Kind of like writers... They aren't paid because they can type, or because they own a word processor... everyone can. They're paid because of their ability, which I think is the true pinnacle of every artist regardless of the medium.

Low cost, high quality aquisition really has a lot more implications to it than just upping the bar for low budget films. All MO... take my comments with a bucket of salt.

Say, I've got question...

If the resolution is 2100 x 1080 or (even better) 2200 x 1080, the aspect ratio is much wider than 16;9. Right?

How will the lens affect the aspect ratio? Will it distort? Will SculptorHD correct the distortion?

Just curious.

Hello,

That's correct the resulting aspect ratio could end up being much wider than 16:9, although it doesn't seem like it will quite make it to 2.35:1. It will almost definitely do 1.85:1 natively.

Any lens issues will behave as with any other wide angle lens. Remember that the increased horizontal image size gives you a wider image, so if you wanted to achieve the same angle image you achieve now at the widest setting, you would actually need to zoom in for this!

Cheers,
Juan

Juan I have a quick question for you, if you have the time to answer, if not, no problem, actually I guess anyone with experience could answer this.

Once the files are ingested RAW uncompressed, and CC'ed, do most people offline the footage for editing? For those of us who like to edit online what is generally the codec of choice, given that the platform, for the meantime is Mac?

I'm about to buy SheerVideo for a project I'm working on now (since it's so cheap at the moment), would that be a good online codec, or does master Obi Juan have a favorite we should know about?

I also assume there are detailed instructions for sculptor HD on how to work an offline workflow. I've only done offline once, and at that it was on tape. I have a hard time wrapping my head around how it would work simply with the andromeda/hydra system.

In the back of my mind I'm thinking something like, exporting an uncompressed codec, moving into FCP, syncing the audio, reading the files, importing and organizing the media, and then transcoding the files to offline RT or something, and, then reconnecting the media after the assembly to the offline files. Worth it for the extra speed and quality, but perhaps I'm missing something and there's an easier way.

Will Hydra have a special online RAW uncompressed codec for online in FCP? Something like Hydracode RAW?

Thanks, and sorry to be a pest, if these questions can't be answered I totally understand, but I guess no harm in asking.

A laptop question.

It may be early to have an answer to this, but with the Intel Macs on the market, there are a lot of G4 powerbooks available a excellent prices.

Is, say, a powerbook G4, 1.6 Ghz with 2 Gigs of RAM enough to handle the Hydra data?

Price is going to be about $3700 for Hydra and Windows support is being worked on as we speak. That's what one of the guys at the booth was telling me at NAB. There was also some Andromeda footage playing on the screen that looked incredible so I can imagine the HVX200 with Hydra is going to look stunning.

Also, the placement of the ethernet port is right next to the User Settings buttons under the LCD closest to the battery. I wish I had taken a picture but I didn't think about it at the time.

You know if that's a solid price or just a guess? who did you speak with?

Guess now we'll be waiting to see images...

Oh, and did they say when they're unveiling Hydra?

Thanks Barry and Jack. I really want to hear about this and see some stills. Hopefully even footage.

oooohh. I hope it's more like 3 grand even.

3700 is a bit steep. Then again, small price to pay if you own a good comp to get 2k 4:4:4 14-bit color.

Has the andromeda record been good in terms of reel-stream addressing problems, fixing issues?

I guess nothing is overpriced if the quality and service is good enough.

Sadness. So no images for us this NAB, no announcements, no nothing but second hand rumors. This was actually my personal big NAB thing.

Now waiting for a confirmation on 3700, images/footage, and to find out if it is 14-bit or it didn't quite reach that. I'mma go cry about it some more.

I KNEW IT!

Congrats Juan, I hope it works. If it was a box on the bottom of the camera, as I wanted the dvx realstream to be. I'd buy it NOW, just can't stand the computer on a cord setup...arrgggg
