Wow -- a complete package of body, 17x Fujinon lens, 4 16GB cards, viewfinder, and tripod plate for under $20,000...

Wow, indeed.
Very aggressive/competitive pricing.

Onya Panny !

Hey Guys,

Sorry to but into the thread since I'm not worthy of or have the money for this cam, but... Does anybody know if this camera will record 4:4:4 uncompressed footage?

Also, instead of p2 cards or a firestore, can you record footage to a Mac Mini instead?

I'm debating on getting an Andromeda or not on my DVX since it only records 24 frames. The Andromeda is also something I will not be getting (even if I wanted to) anytime too soon.

Please let me know...

Thanks

NO its not 4:4:4
Yes you can firewire to a macmini

can you use prime lenses on this camera?

or i should say: does anyone make prime lenses that would fit this camera?

how bout those old style 3 in 1 prime lenses that rotate?

would look so funky on a state of the art cam like this

This looks like the camera I've been waiting for! So far, so good on specs. Can't wait to get my hands on one. Waiting for Berry's review!

I had the privilege to view the camera at NAB with Barry and as usual he was very generous with his time and insightful comments.
I’ll not discuss technical features since you can find all the info you want it on line, but I’ll give my first impression.
The camera looks great; it’s not heavy or big. It handles really well handheld and has an excellent balance. It’s not too different from the HPX2000 or the HDX900 but it’s certainly lighter.
The viewfinder is not exceptional but it’s appropriate ($ wise).
With increased sensibility (1 and 1/2 stop if I’m right), more “cinematic” depth of field due to the 2/3 chips, 4 P2 cards slots and variable frame rates “it’s the perfect upgrade for serious HVX users” (Barry’s quote).
Thankfully Panasonic kept the menu consistent with the HVX (which doesn’t look too different from the Varicam).
The price, as discussed here, is extremely competitive and it should be available next month.
For most people, like me, that has not an extensive experience with larger broadcast cameras I suggest a test run and I predict a certain adaptation curve. That said, the HPX500 is an excellent choice for independent filmmakers (narrative or documentary), corporate and any budget sensitive work that aims at high end, tapeless workflow.

Just got back and gotta hit several forums, but that 500 was the best "toy" I saw at NAB.
Barry gave me a great demo and I eaves dropped on a few more.

I had always planned on the HVX as being our "first step" into true HD. But I have finally found my long term next step with the 500. The fact that it works so much like the HVX is all the better!

The ONLY negative I had, and I might be in the minority, but I wish it had a slightly more streamlined and slicker look. Maybe Panasonic can give it a little something more before release.
Oh, and I hope Panasonic covers that exposed Breaker at the bottom of the camera. I'm told it won't hurt the camera if it gets pushed, but I can see it getting hammered when trying to click the camera on a tripod or setting it on the ground.

Personally I'd go with a better lens then the sub $20,000 package, but it's a real winner in today's options.

Hello Ted,
I did see you over at the workflow areas trying the HPX on for size. With the 4 -P2 slots and the 16 gig then 32 gig coming out the 500 was attractive for many shooters.
