after ordering my perfect laptop for P2 off loading and editing and being told it has one pcmcia slot, it now transpires upon dispatch that it doesnt and in fact has the new pc express slot. now i can send the laptop back because it was there error. however this leaves me thinking am i realistically going to get a powerful laptop with type II.

are we any closer to a convertor or usb version of card reader?

this seems like this could be bit of a spanner in the works for p2 as a lot of laptops are moving away from pcmcia..

thoughts or advice please?

It's up to the manufacturers. They can actually do both types of slots in the same computer; some Sony VAIO models have both PCMCIA and ExpressCard slots.

www.duel-systems.com is making an adapter to allow PCMCIA cards to be used in ExpressCard slots, and should have something on the market in the next month or two.

thanks Barry.

Hmm, does that mean I stick with new laptop on the hope that this card adapter might work and might appear?

Do we think it's likely there will definately be a solution to this or would people play safe and go for PCMCIA laptop? After all I would imagine PCMCIA is going to be phased out in the not too distant future.

ROne,

is the laptop you purchased a Dell Inspiron? Looking at their website it doesn't look like they have PCMCIA slots any longer.

No it's a rock system. British builder.

Thing is I was told PCMCIA from the start and then on the day of dispatch I was told that was a mistake. I'm torn whether to send it back or just to wait for some convertor.

Failing that the acer travel mate 8204 is virtually the same computer but has got both PCMCIA and express slots. Trouble is don't trust the ACER.

I have a friend who buys acer and swears buy them. His has a amd turion 64 and I recently was using the p2 viewer on it and it ran well. The one criticism I have heard of acer doing some research is that screen brightness is not great. I thought the clips looked fine though.

I ordered the acer yesterday. After careful consideration of rock system i decided it was silly to keep it. The other thing is, which i didn't appreciate till i saw it was the size. It was based around a 17" monitor at 1600x1200. when i saw it it was too big i feel for hulking about. the acer uses a 15.4 screen and still packs 1400x1050. The laptop also has a hard drive that can park itself if it feels a sharp movement. Its available in two flavours a 2.0 core duo and 1.66. i went of for the latter as i think that will be fine for P2 viewing.

No announcements of any such product, but you can always get P2 Log from Imagine Software. It provides all the functionality of P2 Viewer and a lot more.
