NAB 2007 - EDIUS Broadcast v4.5

4.5? Cool. Hopefuly, finally some real fixes, and some decent improvements. The background transfer was a good improvement. None of the things I have bugs with have been fixed to date, though.

To be welcomed.

I've got to say I've had very few if any problems with edius 4.13

Look forward to it.

I just tried an experiment with Edius 4 Broadcast V4.22, and was able to get capture to work at 720P.

I was hopeing the long-known problem with capturing 720 was fixed with this build (which has been released in Japan), but no dice. However, I noticed that the capture dialog that Edius displayed indicated that it captured for exactly one second, and that it created 30 divide files. That made me suspect that somehow Edius was incorrectly detecting a timecode break.

So, I went into the RECORDING SETUP menu in the HVX, and I changed the TCG mode from REC RUN to FREE RUN, and bingo, Edius was able to capture the data stream from the camera without choking.

I don't believe having V4.22 installed has anything to do with this working, since the new build still fails in REC RUN mode -- I would be surprised if this didn't work with V4.13 as well.

Edit: In case anyone wants to try V4.22, it is located HERE. I strongly suggest sticking with V4.13, there are things that are broken in V4.22 that worked in V4.13.

THoff, are there any readmes in that package before I download it - or a list of fixes?

Hey T thanks for the info. I tried this on my laptop with 4.13 I could not get it to work. I also could not get 1080 to work either. so I went to my desktop and it works like a charm. So I will have to reload 4.13 on my laptop

Yes, there is. Since it is an HTML file with links to images in a nested directory structure I have converted it to a PDF file and attached it to this message.

Version 4.20 ( Release: 12/18/2006)
  • Fixed issue when closing a project with nested sequence clips.
  • Fixed issue with audio level learning (the audio was heard at the previous level).
  • Fixed issue with QuickTime Movie clips (the color conversion was not correct).
  • Added function to show a progress bar during EDL import.
  • Added function to the exporter to sort and search.
Version 4.21 ( Release: 1/19/2007)
  • Fixed issues when trimming transitions using the mouse (operation was slow).
  • Fixed problem when capturing (when in/out point was set to pass over 0 hour, the capture button did not work).
  • Fixed issue when editing (the video and audio went out of sync).
  • Fixed issue when importing EDLs to a 24p project.
  • Fixed issue when handling P2 clips (audio waveform did not show properly).
Version 4.22 ( Release: 2/14/2007)
  • Fixed crash issues when using the color selection palette.
  • Fixed issues when consolidating projects.
  • Fixed crash issues when changing settings with Xplode transitions.
  • Fixed color table errors when saving still images in HD resolution.
  • Fixed issue when setting values (the keyboard arrow keys did not work).

I would hold off on installing this unless you absolutely need one of the fixes made since V4.13.

Before you reinstall, check to make sure you are using Generic OHCI, that the IEEE 1394 to Ethernet Bridge is not installed in Windows, that the ICF (Internet Connection Firewall) is off for the IEEE 1394 Network Adapter etc. Also try another cable and/or port.

I am now experiencing crashes after exporting through Procoder Express. I have seen reports previously of this happening to others, but it didn't affect me -- now it does.

Also, some icons in the user interface went AWOL, like the ones that set the preview area in the Whitebalance dialog. The buttons still work, but they are blank.

None of this has been a real problem, but you should be aware of it. I've also seen mention of unspecified problems on the Unofficial Canopus Users Forum.

Yeah. That has been happening to me already... since one of the updates. Not really crashing entirely. But, a fatal error in pce after the process is complete. One thing I have been experiencing as of late, is that once a render (for a dvd) is complete it doesn't continue onto the burn process. Opening up pce for dvd externally does not work either. A restart fixes it.

Since I am not working on anything important at the moment, I'm thinking it may be a good time to do a fresh install, update back to 4.13, and then wait for 4.5

Thanks for all the good info, Thoff. Your contribution is (as always) much appreciated.

Later,
Jason

I think there will be an official update in the US very soon. The folks in Australia apparently have been told that Procoder 3.0 will be available in April, and that is supposed to go along with the Edius update. And of course there is NAB, too.

I don't ever create VOBs or burn DVDs from PCE since it only supports PCM audio (MPEG2 audio is not legal for NTSC disks), so I output MPEG2 program streams that I then convert to AC3 in my authoring app.

Anyway, I'm glad I was able to help someone out. I don't capture live into Edius, I have DV Rack for that, my laptop is too underpowered for Edius.

When does the new Edius announcement happen?

I want to edit 1080p24 that will come from a sony hvr-v1u. currently not supported, correct? i guess it's wait and see. are there any NLE's that currently support this?

From what I have read, we should be expecting a v4.23 around the beginning of May. It is supposed to be heavily, heavily focused on bug fixes. Finally (hopefuly). No new features there.

Then 4.5 will be previewed at NAB and released at an unknown future date. It is supposed to be a big update. Any bugfixes that need fixing (I'm assuming). But, the main thing will be a revamped user interfacte (woo hoo), and other things along those lines. Supposed to be a big one, and will address a lot of the issues folks have had with EDIUS, as well as bring it in line with the look and feel of other GV products.

I'm assuming you are asking about HDV 1080 24p support... If so, it is supported as far as I know. I have an option for HDV 1080/23.98p
EDIUS supports practically every camera format known to man. That's one of the things they are known for. Support every format, and do it in real-time.

Jason

Bob, if you already have the camera and can post a link to a few seconds of raw footage, it'd be more than glad to try it with Edius. Or you can try downloading the trial version of Edius Broadcast and try it for yourself.

THoff, thanks for the offer. moot point now. The guys at Samy's Camera (i'm in Culver by the way) indicated that the V1U wasn't supported (yet) by FCP or (I thought) other NLE's, so it was a camera with no editing platform. didn't make sense. either way, I decided to go with the DVX200 because of the 24pa and the FCP compatibility. I will check out the demo download of Edius, however. thanks again.
