What are some good places to practice filming without looking like a wierdo?

Any good places to just test out my new videocam without getting the cops called on me?

Can I take my videocam into the zoo and start filming the giraffes and stuff? Or is that not allowed in most zoos?

Want to practice somewhere cool before I film people. Any suggestions? Where did you first start filming at?

I'm sure you could go to the zoo. You could probably go to a beach too and film a few sunsets if you live on the west coast.

If you want to avoid looking like a weirdo..... DON'T go whipping out your camera at the children's playground!!!

Unless you bring your kids of course.

In front of your mirror. Wearing only Groucho glasses and one of those big fluffy rainbow-afro wigs, like that John 3:16 fellow at the football games.

Be sure to leave your curtains open.

You can record to your heart's content at a zoo, so long as it's not a for-profit exercise. Leave the glasses and wig at home; they will freak out the giraffes.

most people are interested in filmmakers, and glad to help you out. So dontworry tomuch. just be friendly and polite. i ran in to a buncha cops while shooting footage of the Brooklyn Bridge. They asked me what i was doing who i was shooting for... etc. i had a permit, but they didint even ask to see it. they jsut looked at me and figured i was kosher enough.

And if you do film yourself in front of a mirror, make sure you post the footage so we can give you some feedback.

Be afraid. Be very afraid. Gitmo is just a few film frames away. :)

Seriously, unless you are filming on private property without permission, you should be fine. Of course, be somewhat cautious with certain public buildings and high value targets like Post Offices, bridges etc., but otherwise, go knock yourself out.

Go out shooting with a girl holding a clipboard. You can get almost anything you want without that many questions being asked. Works for me all the time but when they do ask, we just say we are testing a new lens or camera.

I'd expect Steve to chime in with "back yard" as an option... after all, he's the one who made Brandon's brother disappear in Brandon's back yard...

Hmm... back yard, shovel... which movie was that?
Here you can take your camera and shoot anything you like, except private places.

It was his horrorfest entry when his little brother chases after the ball and winds up going into some black hole or wormhole which led him into a different dimensions... or something...

I learned that the hard way.

Just trying to get some test footage.

I don't know why they all freaked out.
