8GB P2 cards officially drop to $700

Optical disc is a nice gimmick (and works quite well) but unless they've figured out how to write to it without having a motor turning the disc it still isn't solid state . . . which (I think) is the point to P2 technology.

What I find humorous is the 8GB card that's selling on Ebay for $872 dollars right now. Wonder if it will keep going up?

Anyway I called a couple of Panasonic dealers here in L.A. I've bene told the price of the P2 4Gb will not drop even though it's being discontinued.

I would hate to be the seller who woke up this morning and saw the price drop. But I'd hate even more to be the last guy who bid on it before the price drop! :)

My guess is because most of the 4gig cards have been paid for at the higher prices and they gotta break even. But at some point it'll be better to lose a few bucks and unload it.

To me 32 Gig cards are pretty much long enough. I guess if you were shooting concerts or something where you never wanted to stop and were shooting 1080 I could see the point in 64's, but I'd rather have a few 32 G cards that I can pull out of the camera and download in some kind of rotation rather than being stuck till the end of the days with a time consuming download of a large card. 32 minutes a load is pretty damn good. I'd rather have 4 -32's than 2-64's especially if the price continues to go down after a while. Once your up to an affordable 32G card this system becomes viable for docs or anything. It's the missing piece and more usefull than the hard disks in general I think.

I'm soooo happy. My birthday tomorrow, and this price drop is the best present. Although, I'm still gonna wait til the price drop reaches more stores before I purchase. I figure there might be a store or two selling below the panny-established $700. Maybe Ill see what used ones are going for in a week or two.

Even at $700, I'm excited. Been a long time comin. Bless ur heart, panny.

Good news but for those who think the 4GB cards will become cheap...I highly doubt it. They are discontinued, not obsolete. They are the perfect size for music videos, easy and FAST to back up and still very useful. I dont expect the used price to fall below half of what an 8GB card costs, say $300 each for now.

ash =o)

Full compass already has lower prices, unfortunatly you missed when they had them in stock yesterday, people when crazy for them.

IT kills me because I might have thought twice before getting my fs-100 on wednesday for two 8gb cards, would have been about 440 less and less stuff to lug around.

Given the decline of P2 card prices and the impending release of higher-capacity cards, what do people think this will do to prices of alternative recording solutions like the FS-100, Cineporter, and Citidisk? These vendors have to feel the pressure on some level.

I'd expect prices should drop on those, but I not until 16gb Cards are coming down in price to make way for the 32gb. Simply because the alternatives are still higher capacity recording devices, even if not native to the camera's operation.

i saw an 8gb memory stick on sale today for $79.00 ... :crybaby:

I doubt that's an 8gig P2 card. Big difference. :) But yeh, prices are dropping on everything.

That's like comparing one SD Flash Card with 2-8Mb/sec write times to a four SD card PCMCIA Enclosure structured as a RAID with proprietary firmware for a specific platform!

why don't you guys wait to shoot your events and films? if 16 gigs at $1300'sh is not good enough, wait in 2015 when Chelsey Clinton is president, 320 gig P2 cards will be available. Ask Barry and others, I am the biggest advocate of Cheap high capacity P2 cards. 16 GB, dang! that is plenty enough, that is 16 mins of 1080i HD multiply by two if you like. Dang people! panasonic actually did good this time, real good no more excuses go out and shoot somthing besides flowers, sunsets and timelapses. that said
i just shot the coolest sunset timelapse of flowers this morning.

I am so happy those cut throat expensive european ipod fs-100's will finally drop their prices, thank God I never bought one. I have been using a single 4gb card, dumping to my laptop for all my shooting. i rented a couple of 8gig cards for thirty bucks a day for a music vid, returned those did not need them becos btwn setups i had enough time to dump the 4 gigs, perfect workflow, if only I could get my $60 back.

oh yeah I highly recommend that p**k's Barry Green's punk A** expensive HVX BOOK. it is worth every penny. It saves you a lot of time in setups, timing the cam etc. Get a copy of that book it will really save you a ton of money in labor costs, and it makes the hvx a very high quality Pro Cam. very well written with step by step instructions. you will never need the cam's manual.

next those guys at Dvfilm.com are cool m**ha f*****s. good job raylight is the s**t. great editing workflow.

oh yeah a kudos to Jan, thanks for the 16GB card. can't wait.

I'll start shopping when the 32GB cards hit the low to mid hundreds.
You know, this site just wouldn't be the same without abaddon proudly announcing he's waiting for the 10TB P2 cards. Always makes me laugh.

If Panasonic did not sell the camera without the P2 cards, people who don't want P2 cards would be forced to pay for them. There are plenty of people who use the FS-100, their NLE, Scopebox, or DV Rack for most or all of their work, and I doubt they would want to pay $1200 or more for a 8GB card they'll never use.
For those people there are Japanese camreas! Seriously the HVX200 is about $1800 less in Japan than in the US right now. It is within $50US of the Canon XH-A1. Find yourself a low $$ importer and don't worry about your warranty situation. It's literally no different than buying a used camera from an individual except it's factory fresh...
