Or "Russian", thats better.

Really compressed WMV footage from 1080-24PA. I'm using the Brevis OCT-19 mount on the Redrock M2. I had to drill holes and guestimate alignment and FFD. I'd say it's 80% there, no where near perfect. "Save as" please.

CLIP 1 - 26MB "Flowers".

Lens is a 1979 LOMO 100mm 3.1F.

CLIP 2 - 23MB "Palms and Leaves"

Lens is a 1986 LOMO CKBK 75mm 1.5F.

CLIP 3 - 13MB "Ice Cream"

Lens is a 1986 LOMO CKBK 75mm 1.5F.

Sun going down.

CLIP 4 - 1.5MB "Bokeh"

Sample bokeh, each scene is a different LOMO lens. 28mm to 80mm.

Holy CRAP Sotty. Your M2 stuff is by far THE SHARPEST M2 footage I see here. Even your last set of wmv's exhibited edge-to-edge sharpness and clarity.

These look freakin' fantastic man. That's for the alert on the post!

You guys should dig up Sotty's older thread. Had Zeiss glass going and it was fantastic.

one thing, Sotty: The footage exhibits a minor bit of smear. Unlike your last run of clips which had more. Did you ever figure out if it was the shutter/Synchro speed or a property of compression?

Could ya give us your settings? And was there any post processing or all in camera? The look of the first one is really nice. Was that in Camera?

Man Kholi, you have some good eyes...or a 45 foot screen.

Settings in camera is Cine D, 1080-24PA, Detail +3, VDetail +3, everything else -1, 0 +1. Gamma: Cine-like.

Glad you like them. I really know nothing about compression, I just play around with everything until it looks good without a massive file. I'd say 99% for certain that smear is compression as when I compare to original 900mb AVI file its very clear. Nothing in post, no filter, just straight into camera.

Really, really nice work. Care to comment on the lomos? I have heard (perhaps repeated) from many sources not to rely on any lens older than 1980. I'm sure the lomo lurkers out there would love to hear more about your ability to acquire such beautiful lenses.

Thanks. I got them from Rafcamera and from Ebay. My favorite lens is the 1979 100mm, 3.1f, paid $125. I really like the contrast.
Pic here -http://rafcamera.com/100mm-lens-oks21002-for-konvas-kinor-oct19-mount-p-275.html

So I don't know about the pre 1980 stuff and don't buy into it. I think there are good lenses from all years. I like the Zeiss and Nikons but the Russian cine lenses breath much less if at all.

LOL. I honestly think it's just the Cinema HD. I'm sure if I check it out on the CRT it'll be totally different.

Great footage, dude. Even though they're tests this is still awesome. Sometimes I doubt 35mm setups because of the soft footage I see; these are a reminder that it's just the operator.

And the glass was ONLY 125.00!?!? You paid more for your Zeiss glass but got comparable results. Do you feel like they're on the same level or completely different?

Yes the Zeiss 85mm was 10x the price of the 100mm LOMO but much faster. I like the Zeiss but the breathing of the still lens never suited me. Of course you can hide the breathing by moving the camera. I just like the look of the LOMO and CKBK. You'd never know to look at that cheap 100mm that it would return and image like that.

awsome stuff. I'm impressed by those russian lenses. I'm trying to learn about adapters and lenses. could you tell me what breathing means? And what is the Brevis OCT-19 mount that you need to put on the m2? I could always do a search, but this way i get to meet you.

Very pleasant images indeed. I think I have a reason now to borrow my buddies lomo cam and lenses. The ice cream stuff has a nice nostalgic look to it... without being something effected in post. Like the 100mm flower shots as well...

Are you using a monitor or such with with your setup?

Breathing - refers to when optics change the apparent focal length slightly when racking foucs. Another words you can see the framed image move and shift when you rack focus.

The Brevis OCT-19 mount seen here - http://www.cinevate.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=43&osCsid=037558e08d5214ef723a2e85b5298a2e

allows you to mount the Russian LOMOs, CKBK's, and some other lenses. Redrock stopped making the OCT mount so I had to rig the Brevis OCT mount to work with the M2.

No, just the OCT mount hex screwed (by myself) attached to the M2 Nikon flange, with Nikon mount removed from M2.

Just the Marshall onboard monitor.

This might come as a bit of "un-educated" question: Are these lenses, both Zeiss 85mm and LOMO 100mm, are these Prime lenses or Zoom lenses?

Also: I'm trying to learn about lenses as I'm planning to shoot a no-budget film without hiring a cinematographer (with hvx200 +M2+lenses). How many lenses will you recomend, and which types? (mm? f? brand?) [this last question might be pertinent to another thread; pointers apreciated]

thanks

Prime = fixed focal length (the 85 and 100 in this case)

Redrockmicro.com has some good discussion about lenses. A good start would be a wide, medium and long lens - 28, 50 and 85mm perhaps. Check out KEH.com for good prices on second hand lenses. The "bargain" rated lenses really are bargains in my experience.

This is really nice footage. I would love to see something on a dolly with this lense. Are these lenses readily available?

See what REAL nice lenses can do on a Good Adapter....... Droolll.... A nice set of lenses is next on my hit list.....

The lenses is the sample vids are LOMO and CKBK both are Russian made and The CKBK are the higher quality lenses and I believe they also come from the LOMO factory. You can find these lenses on the internet, on Ebay and try Rafcamera.com. The difficulty is not finding them but adapting them to the Redrock M2 if that is your adapter of choice as Redrock does not make the required Oct-19 mount. I know Cinevate makes the Oct-19 mount for it's Brevis
http://www.cinevate.com/ as well as the Sgpro http://www.sgpro.co.uk/.

To echo what StMad has suggested, get a 28, 50 and 85mm, and if you have the budget I'd suggest picking up a 20mm and 100mm.
