HVX, Spiderbrace, Home-made table dolly

This is something I helped shooting last week-end,

www.gboahoops.com check the videos on the right hand side

the workflow was pretty straight forward for the training at the Home Depot,
2 cameras and only 3 cards, while for the games we had to give up the P2 workflow and pop a dv tape in the only HVX.

The main problem has been the autofocus in low light condition,
while the noise was not a big issue considering that this is going to be
web episodes delivered trough youtube.

24pn is what they wanted to use, not that makes a difference considering the delivery method I would have liked to do 60p but that
would have taken too much space on our small hard drives.

I am not a shooter I am just a VFX guy who bought an HVX to experiment
with green screen and vfxs.

My role in the entire thing is to take care of the post.
Please be kind in your comments as this is a lot more about the content then it is about beauty shots and all the edits graphics etc were done in few hours.

All in all I would consider the HVX a mediocre camera for this kind of conditions.

Overall it was shot and edited very well. You shouldn't worry that much about framing and the shots (they where done right by the way) because for this project the delivery of the content is the most important thing and you delivered it well.

Nice looking stuff even under those conditions.. Must have been fun though.. but HVX in low light on auto focus in 24p... that's a coctail for disaster. I've yet to use the auto focus and really don't ever see a good reason to use it ever...

Thanks you guys for the kind words, I am doing my best to be able to be proud of the product.
It was really a lot of fun to shoot for me since I never had a chance my toys before,
the spiderbrace was a life saver to follow the action from a really low angle,
and my PVC tube made skater really came trough even if at the end of the day it needed tape to keep it together.
If anybody has any suggestion on how to get the HVX to
1) keep focus on a flying basketball
2) get more light in the lens so I can close the aperture (the least light hungry settings)
I would really really appreciate since I think we are going to shoot the entire season
and most of it with the HVX.

You'd be best to do the focus pull manually... that would be really tough for an autofocus. I'd put the cam in film mode.. Non motor zoom and then shoot it film style while riding the focus.

you could also really benefit bigtime from a focus control and an HD montior. Then focusing would be a lot easier..

as far as light... I'd experiment with different shutter speeds and angles.. Boasting the gain can also be somewhat helpful... and then compensate with the menu settings... That's what I've done and it's cool for the most part.

Good work. I just did something similar and shooting in dark halls is tough with any camera. Just do NOT use autofocus. Anticipate where the action will be and focus for that.
Editing and intercutting interviews was great.

Thanks for the support!
I was thinking about doing some focus pull, I even built my own little device to do it
but the Idea to focus pull while zooming and following a flying ball with the spiderbrace
seems a bit of a challenge.
I think I will try the route of adding some gain and closing the iris and see if I can get a greater depth of field without messing up the image too much.
What was really nice about the camera was that after putting the pedestal at -7 once I imported the clips in FCP the blacks were not clipped at 0 but they were at a -7 and the whites were way over 100 and not clipped
it might sound silly but that literally saved us from a real bad situation.
I am really enjoying the camera I just wish I had more chances to use it.
