loving the behind the scenes stills.
watched the teaser last time, just not sure what the movie is about yet :P

Coming along nicely. I really hope the story and execution can live up to all the bells and whistles. I've been on too many sets like this where it just didn't...

*waiting for some footage*

CARTS production notes

The follow focus and rods are from Ca-Vision.
We are using the stock lens with the Panasonic anamorphic adapter.
The lens shade is custom made from black foam-core and velcro-ed onto the anamorphic adapter. The monitor is a 16x9 panasonic with Nebtek battery conversion.

The story is simple. Its about a guy who meets a girl in a grocery store, and how he gets advice from others convincing him to pursue her.

I used a color temp meter to read the overhead lights, which fortunately used mostly tungsten balanced tubes. The little additional light we used was modified to fit the story line.

Take into account too, that we will be using Magic Bullet filters to change the color tone of the image throughout the film. So, the lighting was changed to match this intent. In the beginning, the guy in the story is doing his mundane grocery shopping. I wanted to keep a lot of direct spill from the overheads off of him. We un plugged some of the ceiling tubes and added some 4x4 black cutters and some black fabric on the floor or on objects in front of him. This cut down on the natural bounce of light in the grocery store. As the young man becomes more interested in the young women, the over head light comes into play and we accent the young women more and more until when she is in the check out lane, and the young man is stuck in his, she is almost a glow - both from light through the exit door and from some extra light placed around the register. The magic bullet filters will be changed over time from the "bleach bypass light" look to the "bistro" look.

I have been on films too, where the things seem great on set and the story or editing simply sucked. I don't feel this is the case. This film is simply, and it was designed to be, because all of us wanted to apply or skills at something that was easily doable, instead of trying to shoot a larger or more complex project and not having the material be quality in the end. For my role as DoP, I have tried to use the tools we have to the best of my ability.

Thanks to all who have checked out our web site! We will post some clips soon.

One more thing...

Some inspiration for the kind of short film I liked came from Christian Remede, aka "rightfrog" and his 11 min short called "The Wine Bar." I thought it was really good. Only a few actors, one location, well lit and shot, and turned out to be a great example of a solid short.
