Filters to protect the HVX lens?

I remember hearing a lot about some folks putting neutral filters on their camera to protect the lens, but can't seem to find the information. I'm looking to purchase one now, can I get some direction on this? Right now I don't have any kind of protective lens so I definitely want to get one ASAP.

Also, I'm planning on buying an M2 and a mattebox eventually, should I wait on the M2 to buy the mattebox or could I get one now and use it with the camera itself and the M2? Or would I need different boxes?

Sorry for the old questions

You don't want to put a neutral density filter on the HVX to protect the lens, as it will reduce the amount of light the camera gets. But I'm guessing you meant a UV filter, yes? That's what most of us tend to use. I put a UV filter on my HVX before I even powered it on the first time...

Hey mate,

Here's a link to the one I got to give you an idea, it's the Hoya 82mm uv PRO1 Super HMC filter. http://www.videoguys.com.au/scripts/prodList.asp?strSearch=uv+filter+82mm&strSearchType=OR&strSearchMin=0&strSearchMax=0&strSearchCat=0</b>&curPage=2&sortField=description

Don't cheap out on this protective filter (you can get cheap ones on ebay). And yes, you'll need this asap.

You can definately get a matte box now, just make sure it's compatible. Also note that the m2 comes with a rail system so you'll need those to fix your matte box anyway.

Right on. Is that pretty much the one to go for? I'm in the US, but I'll look for something local. But yeah I definitely have gone too long without protection, especially considering how much up-close wildlife photography i do.

B&H is sold out, are there any other places that have these in stock? A google search didn't bring up anything.

Try The Filter Connection (www.2filter.com / 800-882-2832), they sell quite a few B+W products. Their website is a bit goofy, but they are legit -- call them rather than using their website.

ordered! Thanks! It was a bit more expensive than the B&H butI'd rather have it this weekend since I'm headed to LA to do a shoot. Can't wait to get this puppy on and protect my investment

B&H and The Filter Connection currently have no multi-coated B+H 82mm UV filters (010) in stock. The salesperson at Filter Connection told me it would take 4-6 weeks to order one from the manufacturer in Germany.

So... does anyone know of a U.S. reseller that has one in stock right now?

That has to be wrong.....

That has to be wrong.....

Is it just me or in the B&H link do they have the "with filter" "without filter" on the wrong picture.

Pictured the "with filter" looks like crap. Shouldn't the UV filter make it clearer?

All of those images are simulated anyway -- I wouldn't worry about what you see on the website.

Shouldn't of the UV filter make it clearer?
The primary effect the UV filter (after protecting your lens) will be to minimize haze on horizons and in clouds. You can't see the UV but the imager can. This effect is also very pronounced with film. You will not see much on terrestrial objects.

I'm thinking of getting a Hoya Super HMC Multicoated UV filter 82mm

I've used Hoya's before (Polarizer) on my Nikon D50 and liked it. Anyone else use the Hoya's?

Anyone also use Circular Polarizers on their HVX200's?

I use an 82mm Hoya HMC circular polarizer, purchased on Ebay for a very good price, and love it.
Question. Does the lens shade or a mattebox go on with the filter on? (i think it does, but i'm not positive)
Oh ya, i just bought a Hoya HMC UV 82mm for $44.00, ebay.

If you are referring to the stock hood, yes, you can use that in conjunction with that filter. There is a set screw on the side of the stock hood, loosen that, and then remove the hood from the bayonet mount. Attach the filter, and then put the hood back on.
