THoff, have you used the latest updated AVID yet? I'd like to know how the MXF integration fares versus Edius Broadcast.

Nope, I don't use Avid.

If it hasn't improved significantly with the release that just came out, it is very much inferior to Edius Broadcast. It's not just the MXF file handling itself, but also a lack of support for all HVX recording formats that may be contained within the MXF files.

actually you can just use the MXF files with Avid. There is even a tutorial on the avid or website telling you how to do it.

In Avid as long as its a HD version or express pro or media composer, then ther is now a folder next to the OMFI files called MXF. Just drag your mxf files into that folder open the media tool and search for them. then drag them from the media tool into a bin, then you should be able to use them.

We gave in material from the HVX and the JVC-200. All shot in 720p and the highly overpriced post-production house that was supposed to edit in AVID ADRENALIN could not read any of our stuff. We had to make DV out of it to get those overpirced AVID editors to work with us (and we went through 3 of those guys).

AVID is absolute not made to work with anyone or anything. Neither my Edius nor my friends FCP could produce files they could work with. An hourly rate of over € 100 and after many hours we went to DV. If I had ADRENALIN for that price I would jug it out the window.

vent over....

Regardless to which editing platform you choose, the fault of non-compatible footage falls squarely on the shoulders of the Producer. Period.

In this ever changing environment of software and firmware updates, bugs and hotfixes... its absolutely ESSENTIAL that all post workflow be figured out BEFORE principal photography to avoid disappointment.

Shoot test footage. Make sure the workflow will work with the editing platform you have in mind. If it works... great!

Not all frame rates etc. will work flawlessly with every brand of editing software yet. If it doesn't work the way you want it to, either change your camera settings to find a workflow that does work, or find an editing platform that will work with your preferred choice of acquisition.

well, you could have saved you some trouble when you just had converted the 720 files into 1080 in Edius(as i recall you are using it..)...even output in .mxf again, and you would have preserved colour room and 720 resolution...and probably saved some bugs....!

I realle had the same problem, and no real solution so far, its announced that avid will support 720pal soon, but was not clear if pn is included...!

If you take a look on Avid's forum site there has been a huge discussion regarding this subject (Support for European frame rates) and it looks like the new 5.7 version has direct support for 720 50p and indirect for 720 25pn by using open timeline and a 1080 25p project type. Here's the url:

http://www.avid.com/exchange/forums/11/181481/ShowThread.aspx#181481

Edius remains the best when it comes to supporting all combinations but I'll test Avid's workaround when I'm able to

Cheers
