Can you transfer from FS-100 back to P2 card?

A first time poster here, who stumbled onto your great site. All of the HVX threads have answered so many questions already, so thank you!! Now I'd like to become an actual HVX user and contributor. We're very close to making a choice on new camera, narrowed to an HVX-200 or JVC HD110 (an HDV)

Can you dub from an FS-100 to DV tape in the camera? As far as I've read - this can only be done from P2 card to DV tape.

What about FS100 dubbed back to P2 card?

If we were to record raw DV files into the FS100, could those be firewired to a Sony DVCAM (DSR-45) deck, which has firewire input? or do we go back to P2 first, and then to DVCAM deck? or not at all???

We have the budget for a nice little HVX system, with a couple of 8GB cards and an FS100, but not in the budget this year for HD editing timelines (Media Composer 11 - Meridien)

We would archive the HD footage for future, but need to down convert to DV in order to get into our AVID this year?

Looking for some help!
Thanks.

Well, you could play DV footage from the firestore, and record it to the camera's tape. But only DV; no downconverting possible.

You can play back footage from the FS-100 and then tell the HVX to record any incoming data on your cards, so basically yes you can do this.

Not sure. I think so. If you recorded DV .AVI files then this would definitely work, but I haven't tried playing raw DV files.

Is that a real time recording from FS100 to P2 card.. once I tell the HVX to record incoming data, or is it a file transfer to the card?

Yes, it's a real-time live capture. You can't transfer files to the card from the FS-100 (without using a computer) so you play the footage back from the FS-100 into the HVX's firewire jack and tell the HVX to record the incoming stream.

OK, thanks very much! I didn't expect answers so quick!!

1. Can you transfer any HD footage back to a P2 card from say a laptop or other computer? (i.e. the original files taken off/transferred from P2 while on location) We would do this for downconverting at a later date.

2. Are there quality issues of the .AVI dv recording format (I thought that format was old and not used anymore) versus other DV formats that the FS100 says it will record raw?

Thanks again Barry, now we just need to get a demo and confirm with our eyes. We're trying to get through workflow issues this budget year, and kind of spend the time "tinkering" with true HD at the same time.

1. If you've kept your footage in the original MXF format that came off the cards, then yes you can copy those back onto a card.

2. Why woul there be quality issues? It's the same format we've been using to edit DV for the last 8 years or so... Windows systems still use .AVI for DV... am I not understanding something? Choosing DV .avi allows for direct-to-edit drag 'n' drop straight to the timeline.

As I understand it, we can't drag DV into this system, but I could be wrong.. we always digitize real time from either BetaSP or DVCAM decks through a LAIRD ER 2 edit router(component level out to the Avid)

We've been editing with Avid Meridien (purchased in 2000), so not too familiar with actual DV format, I guess. We've shot onto DVCAM tapes and then it comes in component feed, digitized in Avid's compression.

I think we can import DV format files but never tried dragging into this system.

I guess I'm trying to solve two workflows: of "DV" through the Laird component router; and "HD converted to DV" with this camera.

We know this year may be a lot of extra time, but no surprise to us because we are going to make that choice - IF, and a big if, we can use P2 (and an FS100 or P2 store), in the field, and then move footage back onto P2 cards later for downconverting, in camera, the HD to DV tape and then editing some of it this year. Some of our shoots/projects, I anticipate, would just start off as DV format and then firewire to miniDV tape in our DVCAM deck.

Hope this helps understand the workflow.

Next year I hope the budget is approved for Media Composer Software version or at least Express Pro HD. (Also gonna try to switch to Mac for next year) All of our production is for our in-house company.

I think the HVX200 would help us bridge the gap from old MC Meridien editing to MC Soft HD editing. We would still dump to SD Beta tape or DV tape though (no HD decks for us for a long time)

Dubbing to DV from FS-100

Dubbing to DV from FS-100

Thanks for your posts here Barry. I'm a proud new HVX200 owner who's been trying to dub back from a FS-100 to DV tape with no success.

Playback from the FS-100 is showing up in the camera when the HVX is in P2 & MCR/VCR mode, but the tape won't record.

Playback from the FS-100 does not show up when HVX is set to Tape & MCR/VCR or PC/DUB mode.

How do we get that Firewire incoming stream to be recognized and recorded by the DV Tape?

:dankk2:

Scott
