Panasonic HDC-SD1, use along with HVX?

I'm looking for a smaller camera that I can mount on my motorcycle or on the side of my car using one of those really good suction pods from filmtools. So then I remembered looking at the Panasonic HDC-SD1 but it wasn't out then. Now its out, do you all think that it could cut ok with HVX footage? I mean obviously not for critical shots, audio, etc, but for something where I'm going to cut in some footage of the bottom of a car on a road course, etc.

Not some place where I want to mount my HVX lol :)

Thanks!

Hello Mike,

We are a dealer for those so let us know if we can help you out. You don't want to mount the HVX on a motorcycle. We had a client send in a DVX100 that was mounted to a motorcycle and they were shooting a chase scene. The motorcycle fell on the side that the camera was mounted. It didn't look much like a DVX after that but it still worked! Panasonic makes some good stuff.

I just thought I'd share. :)

Best regards,

Thanks Andrew :) I may give you guys a call about it tomorrow. Jasmine was very nice to me when I got my HVX from you all back in November hehe!

The SD1 is a 60i-only camera, so not a good match for 24p/30p etc. If you're okay with 60i, I'd recommend you ignore the SD1 and instead look at the HSC1U. It's the exact same camera, but they've tweaked the gamma and colorimetry so that it better matches the HVX & DVX. Still 60i-only though.

I used a sanyo hd1(the hd2 is out now)for a bunch of car mount stuff recently. It worked great. Shoots 1280x720 @30p and records to sd cards. I never knew how cool a remote was until I started using a car mount.

Thanks Barry,

I got the model numbers mixed up. The HSC1U is the one that we are selling.

Sorry Mike.

I'd love to hear more about the HSC1U. If I was looking for something lower-budget to mix with HVX200 footage, is it better than the Canon HV20? Thanks.

Its color and gamma would match better, but it's only 1080/60i. If you wanted to shoot 24p, the HV20 (after color correction) might actually match better; either way you'd have to convert (60i to 24p, or Canon color/gamma to Panasonic color/gamma).

Okay, what about this question... if you already have an HVX200 -- what would be the better second camera if you want to go cheap(er)?

The Canon HV20 or the Panasonic HSC1U?

The HV20 has 24p (but wouldn't have the gamma and colorimetry of the HVX); the HSC1U would have better matching, but 60i (which could be de-interlaced in post).

Thoughts?

I've mounted my HVX to a car, no problems. I just made sure to get a portabrace cover for it and get a cheap screw on filter to protect the lens. Shooting on dirty roads in winter the thing got pretty messy and the filter was toast afterwards, but I got all the shots I needed.

or JVC HD7?

or JVC HD7?

I was also reading about the JVC HD7 with 24P, but there'd still be the color-correction issues. Maybe NAB will offer something more appropriate.

Eight months after these original posts, I wondered if anyone knew about any new cameras on the horizon that might work as a smaller b-camera for the HVX?

I think it's still the same. I heard of folks using the HSC1U and the HV20.
