Music Video Day 1 - Felicity "No Mistakes"

Hi,

This is my first attempt at filming in 720p. Just bought Edius Broadcast so
finally I can edit comfortably in HD with my HVX.

This clip is a performance cut with one more day of shooting next week for the
story. A lot of this will go if the shoot next week comes together. Tiny budget
and I haven't CC yet but the H.264 gave it a nice gamma shift :)

I can see my errors and I am nervous about posting because of the great
content on this site but I would appreciate your feedback if you have the time.

Looks good. Has some visual staying power, considering it's 95 % closeups of the singer. Some mid shots, and long shots would help diversify things.

Hey thanks. Your right, I realised after that I had not taken any mid/long shots. Hopefully the footage from the next shoot will generate enough variety.

Hey DJDecay,

Thanks for your feed back. You make some great points. I might go back and get that fence shot you mentioned. I am hoping to slow the cutting down when the rest of the clip is shot. This cut will serve as an "in-sync" edit for patches. The rest of the shoot is in an apartment.

I will be tracking and replacing any dodgy sky shots but I'm more aware of it after your comments.

She was made up but I think I just stuffed up the exposure. A few stops down and I might have avoided those nasty skin reflections. Hopefully I wont have to use those shots and can correct the rest of the footage to match in density.

Thanks again.

Looks good. I can definately see the 'feel' your going for.
A couple of things I noticed.
1. Fairly frequently you were on a close up but her eyes stayed out of shot for a long time - felt kinda anoying/uncomftable when this was the case.
2. On a lot of your more medium close ups you had her positioned with a lot of negative space to the opposite side to which she was looking. I was pretty much taught to make sure the person you are shooting is always looking into something, just doesn't look quite right having her nose butting up against the edge of the frame.
So just composition things were what i noticed mostly. But good start. look forward to seeing the new edit with the extra shoot you have planned.

Hey nice job so far. Can see where your going with it. Just a coiuple of coments.
1. Fairly frequently in your close up shots (of her face) her eyes were out of shot for quite a while this resulted in a slightly anoying/uncomfortable feeling.
2. In quite a few of your more medium close ups you had her with a lot of negative space to the opposite side to which she was looking. I was taught to make sure that your subject always had something to look into (unless you are specifically trying to do something stylisticly different). Just seems wrong to have her nose butting up against the edge of the frame.
But I like where your going with this. Look forward to the new edit after the shoot you have planned.
Good luck

sorry new at this forum thing, i thought I hadn't managed to post the first one - is there any way to delete an accidental post!

I just checked out the video and I like it's good. I do agree with the amount of closeups which I already know that you are going to go back and fix.
Also on the shots with her looking out of the frame it's distracting because i don't know what she is looking at so I'm constantly trying to figure it out.

I would grab some movement shots on the bridge when you do the pickups. For instance lets say you put her in the middle of the bridge and shoot straight at her

Thanks guys. I agree with your comments. All good advice which I can use for the next shoot.

I see a lot of clips with singers not looking into the lens, which I like. Why do you think it doesn't work in this case? Is it because I am mixing the two techniques?

(keeping in mind this clip is only half finished)

I think it isn't working mainly because there wasn't any type of shot that really shows what off in that direction. For instance lets say that she is looking at the cars and traffic go by but if you never show the traffic or anything that would allow me to know that. It just seems like she's looking off into nothingness.

So if I cant show you what she's looking at, would you be inclined to lose that angle altogether?

If I didn't no better I would have thought this was a country song! :)
You did a great job I thought it looked very professional. You might want to consider some sort of color grade once you have everything edited. Keep up the great work.

Any adapter used on this or did you shoot everything on the long end of the lens?

Hi Tlorenzo,

No adapter, long end. Have been reading Barry's book on depth of field. Still trying to get my head around it and that's why I think I missed the opportunity to grab some medium to long shots because I was obsessed with the shallow depth of field. I just zoomed in too much. Lesson learnt.

Just bought P2 Genie. Cant wait to add it to my work flow now that Im shooting HD.
Cheers
Glenn
