Timz Music Video Shot In Desert On Hvx With Stock Footage

Oddly, I agree. I think people should not just say kind things about other peoples projects. This is a forum for discussion. And believe me I love discussion. But that said I look at things more on a constructive level and reading over what was said here is to me hilarious. First off the text overlay is taken from a popular artist. I'm sure you can tell me who and how silly they are..., and I love your suggestion about projection...god knows that has never been done before, but the one part I will agree with you on is the comp is not great, done in final cut pro, it could have been done more seamless.

That said i'm sure any carsalesman would be proud to have me do a commercial for them ;)

I think you should stick to your home movie type projects that I am sure you do really well shooting on hvx, but leave the cinematic stuff to those of us who take chances....at least some of us try different things instead of the same old basic stuff which I am sure if I saw your work would leave a lot to be desired for....ok that last part is just mean on my part....lol

ps, I do enjoy the criticism even if for the most part it is off, which i felt this guy was

WOW, ok um, first of film is an art, so its all opinion there are no facts and you cant tell me my views on your mv are "off". the text overlay i think is cheezy and silly, Its been done about a thousand times before in older music videos, its nothing new and I have always hated it... thats my opinon. As far as shooting infront of projection screens, enn I dont think ive seen that much Im sure it has been done but does that really matter? all that matters is what is on the screen and if it works, i think what you did didnt work so that would be a way to do it diffrently. As far as "taking chances" please dont act like you just created the most orginal music video ever, it was a guy rapping infront of the camera for the duration of the song, I am completly sick of mvs because all they are now is a performance with more interesting backdrops, mvs used to be about creating a visual interpretation of a song anyways You did something slightly diffrently with the green screen stock footage bit, I'm pretty sure stock footage has been used in other mvs about the war in iraq though, regardless, yes you took a chance by green screening in this footage, and I dont think it worked. just because it was diffrent doesnt mean it will work, I could shoot a guy standing naked infront of a mountain for 5 minutes and lay a song over it and call it an MV would it be diffrent yes, would i have taken a chance? yes would it be good, Of course not.

I'm sorry you cant stand that one person did not enjoy your video. Yes I was harsh, and I usually am, but the critscem is still quite constructive, a good filmmaker doesnt shun the people who don't enjoy there work, they embrace them and try to get something out of it.

i like to argue.

I dug a lot about this. The desert was a great choice visually and the footage had a really sweet desaturated look. Greenscreening the stock footage worked too, 'cause it allowed you to control it more than rear-projection would.

That said, the stuff you actually shot could have used a bit more pop, maybe some movement to take adavantage of the awesome flares you could get out there and show the scope of the desert a bit more. Also it seemed like the editing didn't reflect the music enough--the thing I've noticed about my favorite rap videos is how the cutting just makes you feel the beat more. That stringed instrument (sounded kind of like a bass violin?) would have made a great base for some powerful cuts.

Just my two bits of copper-like alloy, as the kids say.

Jakie Poo,

So music videos use to be great so you say and they have lost there luster....so lets see what video you have made that is so original or keeps in that old tradition. If the medium is dead but you seem to have such a grasp on it, I would love to see what you got.

let me guess Jake....you don't make, but you like to argue.

Or what you probably make is some reality garbage and you shoot with the hvx so you think you are up to par and can come on here and trash people.

Of course you have every right to critique Jake, but saying something is silly or that it looks like a used car salesman commercial strays from constructive criticism to being a bit rude.

Trust me I am very hard on myself and I don't think I made the greatest or even the most original video ever made. You have a differeing opinion and I respect the fact you don't think the video is good but not in how you presented that.

And when I see someone like you on here trying to rip on something I will argue back...because you are not the only one that likes to argue on these boards Jake

so lets see what you got kid....

my stuff is at www.thebuzzla.com (8 music videos and montage reel)

I'm dieing to see what you have created that would warrant me taking a lesson or two from you....

I'm cruel only to be kind to you Jake

If I see some amazing stuff on there I will be the first to say ok, you know your stuff....but i'm willing to bet that won't be the case

love always,

Ronster

cool. Let's see... where's the beef? Some people tend to just be kind of jerky critics and negative nellies.... so if he's got some chops, he should show 'em off.

BTW, nice looking vids on that site? Are mvs a main part of your biz? I've never found a band to do one for that either, I like.... or has any money..

Good luck and hope he steps up to show ya something.

i've been working in music videos for the last few years, but I am putting together a feature right now.....yeah money is always an issue with bands....and finding a good band is terribly hard

I don't mean to be mean, I just don't like it when people are cocky on message boards and can't back it up...and truthfully even if they can back it up there is not reason to be cocky or rude....I would have said the same thing had I read it on someone elses post

Timz and Ronster have a pair. I really liked it. Im glad he didint shy away from the issue, God forbid someone hears the view point of an Iraqi.

About the text issue, what would have been really cool was if you spray painted with a stencil the letters on a Green paper then Keyed out the green, to make it "real" lettering. plus the imperfections would make it look beautiful.

Good message. GREAT execution. I like the desert scene. I wish Timz was a bit more animated, his performance falls a bit flat, perhaps a TAD more camera movemnt? i dont know, i just noticed that he was there rapping, but not moving for a couple seconds too long. The background images keep you interested, maybe a more dynamic composition, could have helped. I dunno, dont listen to me ive only shot 2 music videos.

(PS i love that the Filename is "master perfect" lol)

Comments like this...my critiscem is based on what I see, this is just trying to be an asshole cause your pissed at me.

"Or what you probably make is some reality garbage and you shoot with the hvx so you think you are up to par and can come on here and trash people."

cool?

Im not really being "cocky" at all im telling you what i 100% honestly think, which is something 99% of people are afraid to do for some reason if everyone would just open up and not be afraid of hurting peoples feelings work would get a lot better because people would get honest opinions. Maybe I'm over the top, I actually I know I am, but the point still stands, people need to get over it, why post something if all you get is "THAT WAS AWESOME" like honestly maybe 3 posts on this topic have been at all helpful to you as a filmmaker, sure it nice to hear that your awesome, but it sure doesnt help your filmmaking.

I havent done any MV's, well since some random thing for fun 2 years ago that we shot on a vx, I shoot action sports (snowboarding mainly) professionally and make short films, Currently finishing up the editing on this last one we did and working on an 06-07 reel. I'll make sure your the first one to see both, also our last film, Turkey Day was featured on IFC's media lab, they just aired the trailer... I edited DP'd and "produced", not to proud of how I shot the thing, a learning expeirence, but never less the thing got on tv. http://medialab.ifc.com/film_detail.jsp?film_id=4048&list=1

regardless, the used salesman comment is completly based on the look of the green screen, when you have backround that doesn't match the forground with the subject it has that look. When someone tells you your work isnt good arguing back at them and getting pissed usually isn't the best thing to do...

THIS IS MADNESS!!! (sorry I had to) :)
Don't worry Ronster I am sure some people didn't like the movie 300 either. :) But most of the 100 million or so who saw it would recommend it. Great work buddy.

I liked that video, it was professionally executed and helped sell the song.
Yes, it is a performance video with some stockfootage intercuts and composites - nothing revolutionary.
But why should it or how could it? Most stuff has been done before and of course once in a while outstanding effects occure (eg bullettime) but for general filming, editing and storytelling most has been said and done.
And guess what, I don´t know how many times I had sex or made love in my life - but I actually still enjoy it!
It`s basically the same technics over and over, but hey, we´re lovin it, don´t we?
Most of us will live a more or less mediocre life, not being the new Spielberg, but still producing moving images and telling stories and hopefuly getting some satisfaction out of it.
This chase for constant creativity and uniqueness often stops people from doing anything at all, so I´d rather do sth "nice" and "ok" than do nothing at all.
Again, good work!

PS I also don´t like the font choise and I would have exagerated the composite even more by tinting the BG differently and destroying the stockfooatge even more, Oh no wait, I know a couple of videos that have done this before...;o)

You shouldn't be surprised to receive opinions when you solicit them. Just because someone does not make music videos does not mean one cannot have a valid opinion of the video's appeal. Personally, I don't think projection would be an enhancement in favor of keying, but I respect JZ's willingness to make an alternative suggestion instead of just expressing dislike.
Without ideas and suggestions and honest criticism, much of DVXusers value would vanish.

good points guys. I think that everyone has opinions and they are all constructive. Now I think we can all agree that the worst feedback is when you get.. I just don't like it and they don't explain why.. or could even tell ya why.. Equally saying I love it without reasons is just as bad.

Either way... a piece that sparks discussion is always good.

I of course like criticism and suggestions both negative and positive. I agree with you.

it is not suggestions or opinions that JZ made I was referring to but rather JZ's tone and disrepectfullness in how he responded (read his original post in this thread)

I have posted many things on these boards and had people tell me I don't like it. I am fine with that. They even say why they don't like it

I am fine with that too.

JZ was insulting...and I don't feel that is warranted on any message board and if I read his comments on someone elses post I would tell him the same thing that I said in here

and trust me, if we didn't have rude comments anymore on here these message boards would be just fine.

there is a difference between being rude and saying why you don't like something and offering up suggestions to making it better.

I wish I made a living doing this stuff Obin...I teach part time and freelance edit/shoot whatever I can in hollywood

and make my stuff on the side

one day maybe i can be a fulltime filmmaker

I find it hard to believe that only one person on this forum so far disagrees with the message of the video, which I do.
So, in spite of the fact that I think the message is sophomoric , and based on youthful emotion as opposed to any real logic or common sense; and that I really can't stand most forms of rap/hip hop etc., I think that the music video is well done. I like the look, the color correction, the editing and I also like the lyric overlays (even though the lyrics themselves are stupid)
Good job artistically.

Actually, when I think about it, artists tend not to think (as stated above), but to feel ( and emotions are often deceiving); therefore I rescind my statement of incredulity at the beginning of this response.

With that said, again, good job.

This thread is funny.

As of this posting this video has been viewed 129,254 times on YouTube so it must have something that the public likes. Gotta love YouTube...

Everything about that video was great.. Just wish is all wasn't true.. Some people have this thing in their head that says "Mr. Bush is good, he would do no bad, he really does love America, it's not about the oil, he wants us to be safe" But they do not realize that we've never been less safe, or more hated by the rest of the world since the day he took office..

Let this song and video be an awaking for the people that have this blindfold on thinking that this war was to protect us..

Oh and, great comps, use of existing light, CC, AWESOME edit, and I thought the stock footage looked AMAZING.. A+ dude, you are a success.. :-)

Seamus McFlannel,

first off thanks for the kind words,

It definetly is tough subject matter and I don't expect everyone to agree with it. my views are definetly liberal but I feel it is good to have both sides out there.

that said it is cool that you feel the way you do but still like the video on a craftsman level. I posted it on youtube and one person on the message board said, and I am paraphrasing, "I will kill this guy (refering to the artist) if he ever shows his face in new york, but yeah the video is really well made...."

I was like wow this guy hates the message and actually wanted to kill someone but he was nice enough to compliment the craftsmanship. I thought that was nice in a really odd way

we live in an odd world right now
