New To Audio? - Read This First Please

Just ordered it, as well as the other recommended things. Thanks to everyone for their help.

Now I begin searching the forum for the ideal boom pole.

Jeremy - I am a new member, stumbled across this board last night. After searching through the threads, I have not found anything that answers my questions directly. This thread of yours posted last year is the closest so far. After reading your thread, it sounds like the Rode NTG1 is a good choice.
Would this mic be to big for the HVX200? Also, the store where I am purchasing the HVX200 suggest the Azden SGM-1X. How does this mic compare to others? Thank you for all insight and I hope you and others can help me. Here is what I will beng on my shoots.

I am getting ready to buy the Panasonic HVX200. I am having trouble deciding on a Shotgun Mic. I have read so many reviews from different forums on various websites.

I had worked at a television station (using Sony XDCAM and Beta SP cameras) where I covered everything from Educational, Entertainment (concerts - B-Roll), premieres), Sports (NASCAR, B-Roll of Soccer Games, etc.), Reality to Documentary, etc.

I know I will be covering these events for various production companies but I will also be getting more into filming. I hope I can get some good advice from someone that has already been in this situation or going through it now.

Also, I am buying a Wireless Handheld Mic for interviews, so I will have this in my package. (Sennheiser EW100ENG-G2 with a Sennheiser Mic, Probably the MD46.

1) how good is the HVX200's on camera mic? What is it compared to? (ex. is it better than the lower end shotgun mics?)

2) what will be a good shotgun mic (this will be mounted on Camera) to use for ENG style shooting (as stated above). I hope I can have a choice of around 3 to choose from. I know Sony uses the ECM 672 on their XDCAMs, however, these are $500+, and I think they're too big for the HVX200.

3) as far as getting a shotgun mic for filming (using a boom), I figure I can always rent one or buy one when the time arrives.

Thanks, Jimmy

The Oktava sounds like a good solution. What is the diff between Sabra-Som shockmount and K-Tek K-SSM, besides saving $75?

Mostly durability... you will probably have to replace the bands on the sabra-som at some point, as they are thin and will break eventually. I'd also worry about swinging my mic too hard in a rubber band mount: over time they can slip, whereas the K-SSM ain't lettin' go.

Hello Audio forum--
Although I understand that I should have read all this before leaving for Kazakhstan (that's Borat country in Central Asia for those who are not into geography too much), I was preoccupied with other gear. Thus, I now am the proud owner of a tape WITHOUT SOUND!

Help! Can't find my SOUND!

I have taped 1.5hrs of International Women's Day celebrations by univ students in Kazakhstan to SD tape. While playing back on the HVX200 and playing back through DVRack and trying to download tape contents on Premier Pro 2.0 --- NO SOUND! I have a stereo Audio-TEchnica AT835ST mike mounted on the camera with a ODE sidemount; Those difficult buttons on ther HVX200 above the battery for CH1 /CH2 are set to the biggest dots;

VCR settings are:
Recording settings: rec speed = SP;
audio rec = 48k(16bit)
1394 TC regen = on
TC mode = DF (blue)
TCG =Free Run (blue)
TC Preset = -------- (blue)
1394 UB Regen = on

UB Mode = FRM Rate blue)
UB Reset = ------------ (blue)
1394 In Preset = off (blue)

Playback Functions : (I forgot to set these...(
32K(12bit) Audio = ST1
Audio Out tape = CH1-CH2

AV IN/OUT Setup:
A.Dub Input = A_IN
1394 Out = On

CAMERA MENU:
rECORDING SETUP: Rec Format = 480i/24P
Rec speed = SP
Audio Rec = 48k (16bit)
MIC AC = ON
MIC Gain1 = -50dB
MIC Gain2 = -50dB
TC Mode = DF (blue)
TCG = Free Run

AV IN/OUT SETUP:
HP MODE = Recording

I have a separate digital recording of the sound but it is not of very good quality....what can I do to save the soundon the tape, if anything? I forgot to check all the settings and pretest the camera as the play had started.....probably also forgot to set the correct parameters and completely forgot that the VCR mode also had separate settings....

Thanks for your help. I was hoping to put it on YouTube sometime next week. Today is March 12, 2007 2:40pm Kazakhstani time.

GoingAbroad, you'll probably want to start a new thread so people notice your post, but if you're not getting any audio out of the camera (tried both the internal speaker and headphones?) when playing back the tape, you're probably stuck with having to sync your separate audio recording. The only thing I notice in your settings is the gain seems (very!) low; I'm not familiar with the HVX though...

No Audio Hvx200

No Audio Hvx200

Thank you much for your response. I finally figured out that somehow, in the rush to set up or what not, I had changed the settings for INPUT1 and ONPUT2 in the front of the camera, hidden next to the XLR cables - to LINE instead of MIC! thus no sound. Good thing I do have the separate digital sound track. But I cannot dub since I recorded on 48kH...

Hey, I have a RODE NTG2, but the XLR wire is so damn short... Can I pick up extentions at Radioshack to hook it to a boom? If so, how much would somethin' like that go for?

Please let me know...

Thanks

That was a typo; it was supposed to read 4073a. Also, if you're buying audio equipment, buy from an audio retailer who actually knows about the products they're selling; in Canada, Trew Audio is excellent. They'll most likely beat B&H's prices too, just give them a call.

Don't buy audio cables from RadioShack. Either PM MattinSTL, or if you're not picky about quality yet and don't mind paying the similar prices, try a Guitar Center or Musician's Friend. (same company)

Audio Technica 4043a Shotgun Mic is no longer found in B&H Photo. What other mic can replace it? Thats as good, or even better...

4073a? I was able to find it at the BH site.
I just got mine from LocationSound.

As for cables, I got them from MattinSTL too. They are awesome.

Kit #7: Self Distributed Short Film Producer Plus+ Kit
Who It's For: People putting together short films and indoors, but are looking to invest in better materials now that they can build upon in the future.
Includes: Oktava MK012 w/ Hyper Cardiod Cap ($180), Rycote BBG ($100), Rode NTG1 Shotgun Mic ($250), Rycote Softie ($100), KteK KSSM Shockmount w/ soft bands ($100), Gitzo 12'7" carbon fiber boompole ($200). Total Cost: $930

I bought the Oktava + bbg + kssm + boompole.

I plan on buying the NTG1 next week. Is this compatible with the bbg and kssm, or do I have to buy these things all over again?

Thanks!

As far as I know the BBG wont work with the NTG1. Being a shotgun, the NTG1 has vents down the side which are part of the interference tube (right guys?), and those need to be protected from wind as well as the end of the mic. I think that Rycote softie in the list you quoted is what you'll need for the NTG1 or a full windscreen of some sort. Dont know about the KSSM though. My rode sm3 shockmount works well though.

So would this kit do the trick?

If so, which rycote softie would you reccommend?

Thanks

First let me say thnx in advance. I'm sure I speak for all NuBees when I say thanks for the time to compose this excelebt tutorial on audio.
I am a begginer who wants to learn and do value the voice of experience.

That said,, let me make an assumption in hope that I picking up on stuff....
I noticed no mention of wireless stuff in your recomendations.
I'm assuming that this is due to boom pole with an excelent mic and a living, breathing, hopfully thinking human being making the right moves with that pole,,,, am I right?

How about a low cost recomendation for someone like me who has to go it alone and although I don't care to be in the shot am too tied up concentrating on my composition, smooth cam operation, etc .. etc ...

OK, I did go to site to see what's out there in wireless but heck I can't figure out how the audio talks to the cam. I assume I'm looking for a tiny mic, something to transmit, something to recieve, and a method of getting the sound into my XLR connection on the cam.
Right or wrong I'm hoping you could take a moment and get me pointed in the right direction.

thnx
Joe

thanks for the breakdown...looking for something in the middle there...but the information is very, very helpful for someone like me...thanks again.
