35mm film out: SDX or HVX?

Greetings. Starting a new project that we will be finishing with a 35mm laser output for film festivals. we have access to both an hvx and an sdx. Curious as to which you all would prefer. I am definitely leaning to the sdx at this point: lower noise, bigger sensors, better optics, etc. Obviously one is HD and one is SD, but I am not convinced that that is gonna make up for the qualities of the sdx I just mentioned. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

My guy would tell me that sensor size and lenses should trump resolution and thus go for the SDX. On the other hand, if you've got that kind of cash, why not go for the HDX instead? It's got all the advantages of the SDX (interchangible lenses, larger sensor size, more lattitude, less noise) along with most of those of the HVX (HD in both 720p and 1080p, variable frame-rates, P2 if wanted).

we own those 2 cameras. I agree a 2/3" hd camera would be ideal, but if we were going to rent, we would just get a 35mm package. so it still looks like the SDX.

If you already have both, I'd just go ahead and shoot some test footage for each and try projecting (if you can't afford to do a 35mm test transfer then try renting a good LCD projector). You may find you like the HVX200's resolution and variable frame-rates more than the SDX's bigger sensor, higher lattitude, and less noise.

No P2 or variable frame rates on the HDX. You'd have to go with the (half-as-expensive) HPX500 if you wanted those features.

If I had a choice of SDX or HVX, I'd try to go HPX500; it's an ideal blending of both. But it's not out for a couple of months.

There have been other threads on this so search around. I can say from first hand experience that my opinion is that the SDX will produce an overall better image. People get caught up in resolution but that is only ONE factor. SDX looks terrific bumped to 35mm. Do a search on the Brian Wilson doc, SMILE, it looked amazing and cut SDX in with F900 and other HD cams.
