SGPro rev. 2/dvx-100 uprezzed with Instant HD

Hey guys. Since I'm preparing for an upcoming shoot I went out on my porch again right before the sun went down to test the sgpro to check how it handles under darker exterior shots. I then remembered a copy of Instant HD by red giant I bought over a month ago which I have forgotten to test out. I smacked the footage together in a haste just to test out, and after a couple of tries I uprezzed the footage in premiere to 1440x1080(yes it crops the 4:3 footage to 16:9) and then I exported it as a 1024x576 h.264 file to save some megabytes.
The is a little big, 85mb, 2:30 min. And I didn't choose the highest quality compression output, but it looks pretty sharp still. And yah, sorry about the TMPGenc watermark :)

As mentioned over, the edit is really bad and the shots are boring, but I thought
you'd might like to see the combo of the sgpro and instantHD.

Looks great. I can't wait to pick up the sgpro myself ;) Watching your footage just makes me impatient...

I'm starting to get really familiar with your porch, my friend:thumbsup:

Two questions: you're using the varizoom lcd, right? which model, and do you find it's suitable for pulling focus with the SG???

2nd, what song is that, and by who?

Hey man. hehe, it's actually quite embarassing putting up footage of the same objects over and over again :)

This time I just used the dvx lcd, which is no go, but I didn't have any batteri left on my varizoom :) I use the Varizoom 7" which I think works quite alright for focusing after you get used to it, but I definately wish it was sharper. But then again it's the only lcd monitor I have tested, so i can't compare the quality to anything else.

The song is titled: "First breath after coma" by Explosions in the sky. Their album:
"The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place" contains only 5 ambient songs, but all of them are just as relaxing :)

No, no, no... It keeps me on my toes about picking up the SGpro. I should have the cash within the next week or so, so I'm close... very very close. I can smell it... well... not really... but... er... whatever...

I'm definitely going to check out "Explosions in the Sky". PM me with any other recomendations on music... it seems you and I have similar taste's. I've got a lot of "underground" indie music sitting on my computer, so tomorrow I'll pass along a few bands you may (or may not) enjoy.

Expect a PM...

peace

*off for drinks*

Cool man!
You're right, the SGPro is quite smelly, like old swizz cheese :)
I'll be expecting a PM!

-cheers!

I really like the look the SGPro Rev2 and it's Bokeh (to me it looks really film like).

I've been having a pretty hard time deciding between all the different adapters but I think I like the SGPro Rev2 the most.

If you like "Explosion in the Sky" you might like "Godspeed You! Black Emperor", they are a little more, uh... esoteric maybe, but have some real epic songs that build and build to amazing finishes.

gsybe were always a little too much for me. they had a few really good songs though.

And jeremy if you want to see the sgpro in action just let me know.

what was your uprez procedure. like how did you record on the dvx and so on to export. even until your final export which is a small file but great length and compression

and what kind of settings or magic bullet used to get your cool film look

Well, I first shot the footage at in normal 4:3 mode with standard scene file F6, but with a wrong whitebalance(hence the blue image). I then imported it into a progressive PAL 720x576 premiere pro project and edited the footage there. I did no color corrections, only adjustet some black levels. I then exported the project as a DV-avi file, and then I opened a new HDV 1080i project and imported the recent DV-avi file and inserted it into the timeline. Where I then added the instantHD effect(and choose 1440x1080 rez), and then I rendered the project timeline, and then exported the file from premiere as a h.264 1024x576 progressive file. That's it :) In short words, simply import your finished edited dv-avi file into a HD project in premiere and add InstantHD to the clip, choose rez, and then export as h.264 with your desired rez.

Hey man,

Can I add Instant HD in Premiete Pro 2, than after rendering it open it in Vegas 7?

Would I open it in Vegas 7 as HD or SD?

I'm already gonna shoot anamorphic and crop the monitor so that crop stuff doesn't really matter to me... But the focus does...

After you uprez the image, does the focus get messed up?

Please let me know...

Thanks

Wow I am impressed witg uprezz for sure. I haven't heard the best things about Instant HD, but that looked sharp. However, I did notice some noise/perhaps artifacting in the dark blue regions of that vase, but maybe it was the sensor searching for an image to register?

There are some noise in the blue areas, but there is noise in the blue ares in the sd source as well because of the wrong whitebalance. And this h.264 file was output with the quality at 60, so the raw 1440x1080 dv-avi file looks a lot better, less noise. Quicktime also seems to do something with the gamma when exporting h.264 files causing the fottage to look more grainy.

Futuredvxuser: I don't have any knowledge with vegas, but I imagine that applying the InstantHD effect is the last step you do in the process.
