Paypal surcharge

I keep seeing sellers adding a 3% or 4% surcharge to use Paypal. Whereas I can understand why this would be done, it is -in fact- against Paypal's user agreement. A buyer really shouldn't be "punished" for using Paypal.

Pertinent paragraph is 4.6
(exception to this rule is if the buyer AND seller reside in the UK. That is only time Paypal allows a surcharge be levied by the seller for using Paypal.)

Okay, not at all important in the big scheme of things, but I just thought I'd mention it in case someone was unaware of this. :beer:

Semantics... I have no problem with people wanting to make the same amount from Paypal as they would make from a cash deal. When you are dealing with cameras, etc, the paypal fees can add up. I bought and HVX and the paypal fee was over $200. Why should the seller eat that?

ash =o)

A lot of businesses don't take American Express for a similar reason - because they have a greater surcharge than Mastercard or Visa.

Aye, of course it's semantics: you could simply sell an item for $1030.00 regardless of payment option, and then offer a $30 discount for cash.
Pure semantics. :beer:

Just thought I'd point out Paypal's take on it, as I bet not many are aware of that "rule".

You are paying for the trust... If only we can trust one another...sigh....Would you pay cash straight to the seller's account? That way you might save alot. But would you?

It's almost ironic that one would post a non-entrepreneurial topic on the rules of a payment service in a subforum that is supposed to be strictly for the buying and selling of goods between forum members.

Makes me think that there's always going to be a little leeway on how people choose to conduct themselves and their business on a public forum.

Not a sermon, just a thought. :grin:
