Just Say No To YouTube/Google...please...

I'm a huge fan of all you guys that do great work with your DVX100s, but lately a lot of yous have been using youtube or google to upload your footage... me personally use the services for other uses, but I wish you guys would use something else... I know it can get expensive - but their are those free services that you can use (with ads of course) I suggest to look into it...

Am I the only one that feels this way? again, nothing against youtube or google - i just don't think they are suitable enough to show the great quality of work you guys are trying to show...

here are some places you can get a free account...

this site offers no standard of footage quality to be shown, some the the user (myself included) dont have access to upload large files or download them for that matter. I think your comment is seriously narrow minded to the extent of the diversity of users on this site. If u dont want to look at them, then dont... its strange for me to understand how more youtube post actually irritates you? its a blog.... its not like these are letters at your front door.

and i am very grateful for people who post both a high res .mov and a youtube link. that way i dont waste my bandwidth (that cost a lot of money in south africa) but can download when i like something i saw.

my 2-cents

Nothing personal...

Nothing personal...

I think what it really comes down to it - if you want your work to be critique, wouldn't you want to show the best quality possible, that's ONE of the main reasons no one has bother to look (or finish looking) at your clip. You are confusing narrowed minded with knowledge - like i said their are the free sites with banners that many here use - don't take this personal, this was a general comment, and you ARE right, after looking at your piece on youtbe most likely I won't bother to see anyone else's work that has a link to youtube or google.

Again, good luck with your project wether your are in South Africa or North America

and that's my whole Dollar, keep the change....

It's our right to suck.

It's our right to suck.

Dude, I hear where you are coming from, but YouTube is a godsend to those without a server or limited free options. Don't upset them just because it doesn't work for you.

I'm sure you just want everyone to do the best they can, but you are coming off harsh. Even with your mohawk, I'm sure you are a sweet and caring (post A-Team) Mr T.

I have found that half the problem with YouTube is not encoding your video correctly (using low quality VBR and some cheeseball encoder).

I offered both a hires download and YouTube version so people like you could take the time to see my crapulent shorts in all their glory. So far YouTube 46 views VS 2 downloads.

It's true there are other download services available, but NONE of them with a built in audience like YouTube. And frankly I don't go to clips I have to download off some free service I have never heard of. I am easily intimidated by spam and porno servers.

I want people to watch my stuff any way they can - and for all it's bandwidth restricted glory, YouTube is free, easy and comes with a willing audience.

If you can do hires, bless you my son, and for the rest of us poor slobs (and even me with my fancy underused server) forgive us our trespasses as we take one up the tube.:engel017:

Fair enough - well said, i'm sure you read my second post offering those that DO use youtube the correct way to encoded for youtube, again thanks for your wise & kind words -

Bezakor already stated this but youtube gives the rest of us a chance to see a quick preview of the film. I really don't feel like waiting around for five minutes while your file finish downloading and then decide that I hate the film.

Hey good point - one that even I in my semi-illuminated (sometimes half the lights are on) state did not consider.

Now to publicly fall on my sword:

I have had 50 something hits on YouTube, and 287 downloads of the hires version!:dankk2:

My server dude is freaking. And I apparently need to learn to read those web site activity logs.

So Kryptics is right in arguing we all prefer the hires. You should definitely not wimp out and just post the 'Tube'd version.

I think this shows a strong argument for both. Jade's right. Giving people both should vastly improve your chances of being seen.

They are both great tools - and if you own a DVX100anything you should probably get some server space too. Kind of a much needed accessorie.

Hey, thanks Kryptics for your kind response and getting what I was saying.

Learn from my assumption that most people don't care about quality - at least for my current film, DVXuser's give a damn!

However, I have a feeling that long after my post "drug fueled finale" (go there and marvel at CC gone amuck!) slides off the front page of DVX grabs, the YouTube version will continue to racks up viewers, and at the end of the day it's people watching your film that counts (that's why DVX'rs do it for free occasionally). So post it on every damn server you can find!:Drogar-Evil(DBG):

Viacom is slowly waking up to the fact that we already knew - there's a huge audience out there on 'Tube and other sites. They want a piece of that. We already have it. And soon, we may even be payed for it.

I think indie film makers who saw other sites go down the crapper because big companies got their fangs in should tell Viacom to go suck it! (I don't know what "it" is but imagine some unsettling appendage of a large beast).

We should also tell people who post illegal content for no creative purpose to back off - put it on bit torrent or limewire or some other untraceable peer to peer if you really have to share your collection of booty rap videos. Leave the 'tube as a place for self expression no matter how lame. If you made it - post it. If you didn't go elsewhere (or don't do it at all if you have a soul).

See the real issue here is major corporations being threatened by us indie film and music types (and writers, bloggers, artists etc) - be steal their audience. They lose control. This is a good thing, but they only see diverted revenue.

Screw 'em. Stay fiercely independent (until they offer you 6 points to direct another American Pie sequel) and keep outlets like YouTube for us.

And the best way for that to happen is if we all post tons of original stuff on every service we can find. Give people an alternative to the mind control programmes of big companies and big government.

I need to go take a shower.

ummm ya i think youtube is a bit cheesey... but i use myspace because i havent figured out how to build a site yet... i dont think myspace is too bad considering the networking oppurtunities.

Jajajajajaj - come on fellas stop hatin on the mohawk, some of us can grown it, others can't...

I have a site and I also use YouTube. It was a back up for me the other day when I had something I wanted to show but was having issues with my website. (It has since crashed and is being rebuilt)
I don't mind watching video on youtube. It has been an incredible source of amusement and information. I have found artists I'd never have heard, seen really funny stuff I'd otherwise have missed and now know what happens when some girl drinks a bunch of Coke and eats Mentos.(still can't find it again)
I think if you want to use YT for a preview and have HiRes available elsewhere people shouldn't hate you. My clip on YT looked pretty good and both of my short films look good also. They're just really small.

Wild Imagination Films - I never said that YouTube or Google where NOT resourcefull sites - as a matter of fact i have accounts in both of those site the i use to upload clips, i check the sites everyday for entertainment - all i was saying that I don't think that the quality of the videos are good enough to show HERE and ask people for their opinion, that's all....
