SEX scenes

The sex scenes I've written to this point consist of three words: "they make love".

Okay, any of you aroused yet? Maybe not. My thing is, I don't think I've ever seen a sex scene that I felt was erotic. And I've definitely never read one. Of course there are lotsa scenes I thought were erotic but none of them were sex scenes.

Just curious what experiences and thoughts people have about sex scenes.

I'm thing EJ PennyPecker might have some inside info--what with a screen name like pennypecker and all...

I've written ONE. And it was purposely forced into a comedic realm, and didn't last more than twenty-seconds.

Sex scenes are BAD.

Maybe download scripts like Wild Orchid, Basic Instinct etc, 9 1/2 Weeks.

I think sex scenes are more erotic when the characters are clothed/partially clothed. Like the Michael Douglas/Linda Florentino (definitely spelt wrong) in Basic Instinct, just the two of them... and the couch.

Also, there definitely has to be some good character development before the sex scene otherwise it is truly gratuitous.

You wouldn't have to describe every single detail, write it like you're just doing a fight scene.

Besides doing a belivable sex scene is difficut. What annoys me in (american) movies and TV series is that they might have a sex scene, but it is not belivable. The female lead has at least a bra on, bed covers are pulled over the moving parts, so to speak, and when the guy jumps away when the husband steps in he actually has had his underpants on all the time...

If the scene can not be done realistically why do it? Or just lead the couple to bed or where ever and do a fadeout. I am not really interested in seeing it, even movie characters should have some privacy.

INT. HOTEL BATHROOM - DAY

DAN stands above a grimy toilet, still clutching MIKE'S card in one hand, while masturbating vigorously with his other.

Staring at the photo of MIKE'S face, he treks impetuously toward orgasm. He grows light-headed, engrossed by searing warmth, as he falls into rapturous, infinite narcissism.

And climax.

He catches his breath, still basking in the nectar of sweet, transgressive joy.

Suddenly, he realizes what he has done.

If you aren't making a porno, then just like Petrus said... let us know they are having sexual interaction, fade out, then the cigarrette scene lol

Seriously, erotic scenes sell to certain crowds, however, It becomes an embarrasment when I watch a great movie with certain friends of mine, then like the scene in Jerry Macguire in the begining comes on..... I feel like whistling or saying "So how bout them Colts".

Read a romance novel, but leave it out of your film.

I thought this was an interesting comment in that the movie is better known for the sex scenes with Sharan Stone.

Another Michael Douglas movie, "Fatal Attraction", is known for steamy scenes with Douglas and Glen Close, but I always thought the most erotic scene was the one when Ann Archer is alone in her bathroom considering herself and simply combing her hair.

Try renting just about anything with Shannon Tweed in it, she always does steamy sex scenes. Just don't expect stuff like great acting, or plot.

Just to correct myself, it was Michael Douglas/Jeanne Tripplehorn in Basic Instinct.

My comment on things being more erotic when characters fully closed... maybe substitute 'erotic' with 'passionate'.

Here's an interesting passage from the great Josh Friedman:

Many years ago I did an uncredited rewrite on Return to Paradise with Vince Vaughn, Anne Heche and Joaquin Phoenix. At the time I was dating Girlfriend Before Wife, a lovely but tightly wound woman who I'd known for many years, dated for a majority of them, but could not see my way around to marry. GBW was a writer and a director who made very personal, if slightly abstract, art films while I was tripping my way across town being the monkey that I was.

She kind of loathed me.

Now while writing my draft of Return to Paradise I came upon an opportunity to write a very hot and heavy love scene between Vince Vaughn and Anne Heche (a hilarious sentence now, I admit).

At the risk of, well, my reputation, here's what I wrote:

"Then her hands reach out and he takes them. She enfolds him and kisses his lips so light he barely feels it on his mouth. He tries to say something so softly that it's lost in her mouth. And then another kiss, one that flushes the cheeks.

She kisses him again and this time he kisses back, hard. She grabs for his waist as he moves his hands to her breasts, slipping them inside of the robe as she pulls his shirt up and over his head.
Back against the bed, jeans pushed down by a foot, tongues exchanged for hands, and fingers, and tongues again. He moves into her or she into him and it doesn't quite hurt but it's just close enough.

The red skin of an arm gripped tight, and an ear bitten, and the low sounds get louder but as they do the lovers drift away from us. It's so much more for them and less for anybody else right now that it seems right that the room darkens and darkens and fades to black as two desperate people pass together through a window of want and need and loneliness."

I've got more. The set up is that Jimmy is a 13 year-old boy who suffers from necrophilia and Dr. Jones is the ghost of a psychiatrist, who doesn't realize he's a ghost. Mysteriously, Jimmy and the doctor have been led to Dr. Jone's grave and Dr. Jones has just realized his fate....

JIMMY removes the corpse from the coffin and throws it on the ground. Its head tears off its body and its arms snap and ooze viscous, pungent putrescence. He removes the corpse's pants and proceeds to vigorously sodomize it. The translucent ghost of DR. JONES stares, unsure of what to do.

JIMMY thrusts hard, tightly gripping the corpse's shoulders, which disintegrate in his hands.

DR. JONES (in ghost form) is so aroused that he places his hands in his pants and masturbates furiously.

INTERCUT between slow motion close ups of DR. JONES, JIMMY, and the corpse. DR. JONES' and JIMMY'S respective faces are frozen in ecstatic contortion; the corpse's face is frozen because it is dead. DR. JONES and JIMMY climax simultaneously.

Come on, do we really need ANOTHER Ghost Psychiatrist and boy necrophiliac buddy movie? I hate to tell you, but this has been done before by others--most notably by Ridley Scott in "The Adventures of Horny Hornbarker and Doctor Specter".

Are you actually suggesting sex doesn't have a place in film? Sex is part of life. Film reflects life. Ergo ... sex has a place in film. Even if it makes you and your friends uncomfortable.

As to writing a sex scene, the best sex scenes are those that advance character and story. Conflict is even better. Look at a film like Monster's Ball. The sex in that movie is never gratuitous - and there's a lot of of it. The behavior of each character in each sex scene is dictated by the characterization. There is conflict everywhere. Another example of sex scenes with conflict is in the movie The Dead Girl. Several characters have or attempt to have sex and in each case the kind of sex they have or try to have speaks volumes about who they are.
