Please Help. I Only Copied The Mxf Video Files

I'm not sure i understand. I realise that the demo will only repair one clip. But shouldn't we be able to view that clip or are you saying that the demo will repair the clip but not let us view it?

The software does work, and we're happy to assist paying customers in reclaiming their files, regardless of the problem. Isn't that the objective?

Paying customers? You won't be getting any money from me after that statement, very unprofessional, good luck with your product.

adamski, sorry to sort of take over your post, but I don't think Dan want's to try and figure out the issue here. Can any other P2 users here delete everything but your MXF files and try the demo of P2 Log Pro and see if they can recover 1 file and see it in FCP?

Let me try one more time...

The repair wizard is geared for browsing to disconnected MXF files, one at a time, and recreates a new P2 Volume with everything you need to open and view it in P2 Log or FCP or any other P2 compatible product. Of course you can save and play that repaired volume (with a single clip in it) within the demo.

If you've distroyed the XML files altogether, I'm afraid you'll have to do this clip repair process to rebuild that information in order to have a valid P2 volume.

Assuming your MXF files aren't damaged in some way, P2 Log Pro will recover them. And, we have been able to help some that have even had damaged files, but we're not going to do that on a 'demo' basis. sorry.

You can always uninstall the demo program and reinstall it to try another MXF file, but personally I don't understand the mistrust? If you want to know if the product works, drop me an email and I'll give you the contact information for many satisfied customers that the repair tool saved their bacon.

I think Dan has tried. The demo is just that, a demo.
I'll give a caller basic info and a demo of our stuff, but when he needs something shot or script written specifically for his project, I'd expect him to pony up also.

I have no idea who Dan is, but from reading his posts and attempts to help, I don't think his statements are a reason to mistrust him??? More likely the opposite.
I wish you well.

I never said i didn't trust Dan, i was just asking the question if i only have mxf files will P2 Log Pro recreate a P2 volume from just the mxf files? The reason is that i tried the P2 demo and the clip it recreated the P2 volume for wouldn't show in the P2 viewer, and i know that clip is fine as i checked it out on an avid system. I understand that a demo shouldn't give me full working capacity to change more than one clip. I just wanted to see if it works. And i personally couldn't get it to work. The issue in this post was not intended to be a forum on P2Log pro, but a forum on how to rescue a project if you only have the mxf files and not the other metadata from the P2 volume. Which obviously for some people P2log pro has been a solution for this issue.

Me either. I feel for your problem, I had the same thing and finally recovered the files. Although I had to encode the files as HD Mpeg2 files, I could at least edit them in FCP and finish my project without hardly any quality loss. If you have access to Avid, and Procoder 2 you can recover your files that way.

The demo is just that, a demo.

Maybe they should take out the part that read's it will recover 1 file, and put in "It will recover one file for some, but not for others".

I just got my HVX. I shot some random footage as a test and I imported it directly into FCP by way of hooking up the HVX via firewire. After reading this thread I started to second guess my importing technique. "Before answering, I just gotta ask -- WHY do people do this? It's so puzzling. It's actually more work for you to dig into the CONTENTS folder to find the video files, and it breaks the whole system. And all the other additional folders don't take up more than, what, 10% of the space at most?" I didn't drag any of the folders from the P2 card onto my computer, like I said I just imported them directly into FCP. Am I doing something wrong? Should I be dragging the entire folder onto my system? And if so, where do you recomend putting it?

It is my understanding that even Apple recommends not importing off the P2 cards directly and that you copy the entire card contents to a folder on your hard drive first.

Where you put the contents doesn't really matter, as long as you don't rename the CONTENTS folder and avoid putting the whole thing into a folder with certain non-alphanumeric characters. Apparently things like pound signs ('#') can cause the P2 Import feature to fail.

C.Kennedy, what your doing is fine, I would only copy the whole folder if you are backing up your p2 for some reason (remote location).
I actually lost my footage when I was transfering the P2 volume to a laptop at a remote location, only later to bring into my editor. As far as normal use I just hook up the firewire and open FCP and import P2 without any problems. And for backup I just burn the wrapped files to DVD.

Perhaps this is a feature we shouldn't even offer in the demo since there are a host of things that could be a problem with your test. None of them are likely insurmountable, especially if all you've done is disconnected the MXF from it's original folder structure.

Maybe it'd be better to just show how simple the dialogs are.

Just in case anyone finds themselves in the same predicament i bought a copy of P2 Log Pro and it worked and rescued my project. there are only 5 files i haven't been able to recover out of roughly 100 or more so it has had around a 95% success rate with my files.

that's good to hear. On a side note i don't think it was the p2 store that malfunctioned originaly. I'm not a tech head, but you seem to have to plug the p2 store directly into the computer (in my case a macbook pro) which only has one firewire port, so it's natural to have a hub set up. When I first tried the p2 store, plugged into the hub, I was also experiencing the very upsetting realisation that it was going to take 30 minutes. A bit of googling solved it, but it doesn't seem to be that well known. That's why i mention it to you for future shoots.

A couple of additional bits of information.

When Final Cut wraps P2 footage into Quicktime, it uses the *.XML files in the /CLIPS folder to gather information that eliminates the guesswork from removing pulldown. I shot in 1080i24p, brought the QT into Cinema Tools and was able to automatically reverse telecine to get to 1080p24.

If you have only MXF files and are trying to use Raylight on a PC to salvage them back to a MAC for use in Final Cut, you lose the metadata needed for automatic reverse telecine via Cinema Tools. Also, finding a compatible codec between the PC and the MAC can be a challenge. I salvaged some clips this way and had to use a TIF file sequence to transport them to the MAC.

Anybody have a preferred codec/format for round-trip between PC and MAC ?
