Short Film Screen Grabs M2+HVX+Nikon

Hi Guys, i filmed my first ever short film for my thesis at the weekend, using the HVX200, M2 and a set of Nikon Primes, living as a student in the UK has made this more than a challenge to shoot but hopefully it looks good, well, that's for you guys to decide.

When its edited i'll post it in full, but don't expect too much, we lost a lot of shots to changing weather and a crew member needing medicle attention after treading on a rusty tin.

Right, anyway.

PS: the watermarks are from the demo version of Raylight, plugin for Premier Pro to just pull them off tonight, will be editing in FCP and AVID.

Thanks in advance for the input.

The first three look a little milky as in there's no blacks.

I think if you were going for a "30 year old film" look, it worked.

If not, the HVX is still a wonderful tool. Or... so I've heard.

the first 2 are a bit over exposed and the 3rd is really overexposed. blown out whites. this is one reason you dont give your actors white shirts.

in my opinion blown out highlights work as long as they are minimal - just touches of blown out are in vogue and add an edgy look. That said - the third grab has far too much blown out - if the actor has a white shirt you need to stop down and perhaps add some light to the face

i like the 3rd grab - it looks like a door is open and light is leaking on him - if thats what you are going for it looks very nice

I agree, the third grab is aweful looking. It reminds me of my old VHS-C camcorder when I was young..... i think your color balance might be off as well. There is something about those skin tones that look odd.

In post, I'd bring down the blacks.

I remember having a conversation with another filmmaker about how that sounds so racist.

I said: Yeah, let's crush the blacks a little bit more.
She'd never heard the expression before. Eeeeh.

I had the exact conversation with my girlfriend 'Crush the blacks and highlight the whites' lets hope no one was eavesdropping!!

Easily done - bit of post tinkering and you're home free -

even the infamous "third grab"

- which might work in a "jesus this noonday sun" kind of a way.
