Spec Beer Commercial - Looking for Feedback

Pain in the ass
I had someone ask me to direct a spec beer commercial. We did this one last fall, but for a long time we were too busy with other stuff to finish it.

Now, we are finishing it and then going to do another one in this "campaign" in HD and make it look as good as KATRINA. This one is DVX. But if nothing else, we want to get a couple of these on our reels.

However, I am looking for feedback on the edit here. We think the bar is ugly and wish there was a better location. There will be in the future. There is no music and no V/O yet, but I want to get the edit as perfect as possible before going to a composer.

I give it two thumbs up so far. I realize you have a ways to go. Maybe one small critique is that you don't see the bottles uncapping, all of the sudden they're just spraying. A bit of a jump.

Would love to be working with clients open to this sort of advertising!

You don't think any of the pacing is off, too fast, too slow anywhere?
 
You guys crossed the line a few times from 09-14 and it gets confusing where people are supposed to be standing and which way he is moving. The guy in the red shirt throws off the girl in the red shirt because it looks like the same person at first but on the other side of him in the next shot and you have to watch it again slowly to see thats if different people. Plus the crossing the line thing makes the red shirt problem multiply.
 
Just watched it again for pacing. It feels off because the long shot in the beginning collides with the fast cuts right after. Then it goes back to slow shots again. I felt it should be one or the other.


Edit: watched it again...Too many close ups and medium shots. No large establishing shots to get a sense of space.
 
the red shirt guy is a problem and I am already working on cutting around him or masking him somehow. Or maybe cutting in some earlier footage of him to establish him - and still mask him or selectively CC him...
 
well, there is a lot of V/o under that long shot at the top of it. And basically the parts that are stretched out later in the thing also have V/O. I will get another version up with V/O and music hopefully next week.

That was hilarious, loved it. It's totally what the beer guys have been trying to say but can't get it on the air. (you may or may not be surprised how many ads get banned by the networks)

I'm looking forward to future revisions.

PS what frame rate/settings did you use?
 
You will never sell anybody in advertising with this commercial. I think to be "sellable" you need to understate the sex part of it. Make her more willing or just a bit nasty instead of "porn star". Sultry and seductive maybe with a bit of "maybe she'll go for it". works better. Crossing the line ugh! and the lead guy is definitely frat house. I suggest you re- think the concept.
 
My two cents:
I suppose I will have to be 'Simon' (from American Idol) on this one (please know it is nothing personal) and let you know that the lighting doesn't look good. Most of the angles (and pacing) do not look professional. The concept of clipping the girl doing sexy moves was nice. Doesn't look color corrected (i'm guessing it isn't yet). Overall, very funny/good concept! One thumb up, one thumb down.
