PC LAPTOP Vs. P2 8gig

Hello Hvx brothers,
I just purchased an HVX-200 and I must say I'm overwhelmed with joy. This cam rocks! However, I did'nt get a chance to purchase a P2 yet, so I'm wondering, is it a good idea to purchase a PC laptop or to get an 8gig P2?

Cost is the issue here, so I need to be able to record HD not just SD. Have any of you recorded straight to laptop?

My main concern with the laptop is if it will record all 1080 and 720 direct to disk.
I don't want to make the mistake of getting a computer just for the extra room.

Thanxxxs,

You can record any of the non-native modes directly to disk, it is just a question of having the right software. If you are a PC person, then DV Rack 2.0 HD from Adobe/Serious Magic would be an excellent choice. DV Rack can also do the pulldown for you, leaving you with a file similar to what recording in native mode on P2 media would get you.

If you get only one P2 card, you can't record without interrupting your shooting to offload the P2 card. By recording directly to a laptop, you can shoot for hours, but of course you'll be tethered to the computer.

Thanxxs for the advice THoff.
I'll get a laptop first and then will work my way into P2 cards when the 16 gigs come out. Peace!

You most certainly can. Record to DV Rack 2.0 HD and it'll strip out the duplicate frames and give you full access to variable-frame-rate footage.

This site is amazing. I just got my HVX and Barry's HVX digital bootcamp DVD, and then have found so much info on how to put my system together from this site and all its knowledgable contributors. THanks!

I bought DV Rack (haven't received it yet) to do exactly this, and have chosen an HP laptop (DV Rack HD 2 says it needs 1.8Ghz dual core or better), but I'm curious if anyone knows the pros and cons between XGA (1280x800) or the optional SXGA (1680x1050) on the 15.4" laptop screen using DV Rack first to adjust the picture quality and then as a field monitor for focus and light levels. The 960x720 resolution of 720p on the HVX will seemingly fit on both these screens, but 1080, pixel for pixel, will only fit on the SXGA. I see uncertainty in some posts about whether 1080 is truly 1280x1080, or if there is some conversion going on. THen, some outside sources seem to say that the CCDs record at 1080 and downsample to 960x720 for 720p.

So will DV rack let me use the laptop as a field monitor, and will the better screen (only an extra $100) give me a 1:1 read of the HVX resolution in a "field monitor" window, or is that even an issue?

Also, does anyone know if DV Rack can record simultaneously to two portable (external) USB2 Drives for redundancy (through the laptop)? Kind of like a redundant RAID? That way, I'd feel better about insuring against lost (client) data.

Once this capture workflow is figured out, I can start assembling an edius workstation.

Thanks
Fritz

The CCDs sample the image at 1080p, and then downconvert to whatever the recording format is. All internal processing is done at 1920x1080 at up to 60p.

DV Rack doesn't support mirroring; you'd have to use a portable mirrored RAID to accomplish that.

I'd vote for the bigger screen. I've got a 1280x768 screen on this laptop and things get a tad crowded in DV Rack.
