did short use of a JVC tape do any damage?

Quick question:

Just bought a DVX100 (original version) from a guy who used only Panasonic tapes in it. When i was checking it out before purchasing from him, i stuck in a JVC tape and shot about 45 seconds on it. I didn't realize till after that i should only use Panasonic tapes (foolish, i know).

So question is, will that 45 secs of a JVC tape have any effect? Should I take it in to a shop for inspection? Or should i be fine?

Thanks for any input on the matter. I am loving this user group...

nah your fine i made the same foolish mistake by using a sony tape for about the same length just run a tape cleaner thru it and start using panny tapes only i like to use the amq's my self.

Hi,
Is it REALLY that serious. I heard this not long after buying my DVX and up to that point I had, by chance, only been using panasonic tapes. And I continue to do so, but to be honest it's only because I don't know any better. If I were to use a Sony for instance, would it really cause damage?

Thanks

Yeah, but can abyone elaborate a little? Should I REALLY stick with Panasonic tapes, or can I use whatever I want. And what is the technical reason behind it?

Thank's in advance...

you can use other named brand tapes but stick to one brand and use it. dont go between sony and panny tapes.

Alot of it matters what kind of tape it really is. Sony puts out a line of DV Tapes called Sony "Excellence" Series which are amazing tapes. They have lubed tape and they are very high quality. I shoot on mostly Sony Excellece tapes, You pay for the quality ($16+ per tape) for the excellece but they are worth it

I'm pretty sure that DV is DV. I don't think the sony "excellence" tapes are gonna look any different than a consumer jvc tape. I think the main difference in tapes is durability and reliability. Some cheap tapes aren't any good because of frequent dropouts, or maybe you can only use them for 1 pass. Pro tapes are better to use because you can depend on them to work.

The problem is in the different kinds of lubricants used on the tapes, and what happens when they mix. In particular, mixing wet lubricants and dry lubricants is not a good idea. I learned about the difference when the red "X" showed up on the LCD and I had to send the camera for a head cleaning.

yeah it's a bad idea. I always assume people who shoot to tape know about this, but some still don't.

So the wet lube in the sony tape wont damage the heads of the dvx? and to make the switch from amq to the Sony "Excellence" Series would a simple pass of the tape cleaner be enough before the switch or does more of a cleaning job have to be done?

if you wanna switch from dry to wet or wet to dry, i would do a real head clean to your DVX and not just a hard type tape cleaner. tape cleaners are for quick use when you need it, but they really aren't good for your heads, it's just a quick fix.

In that case, I'm going to just find a "nice" panasonic tape, and make sure I never run out...
I also need to learn how to clean the heads myself. I'll look through the forum but if anyone has a link to a recomended thread it would be appreciated.
