Creating Hi-Def DVDs Using Regular 4.7GB Type 5 DVDs

I've done it with HDV material transcoded to DVPRO HD for editing, and then burned the HD DVD with DVDSP4 and played it on a Toshiba unit.

Looked great!

Keep in mind that you will have a limit of about an hour of good quality HD on a single layer 4.7 GB disc. Maybe more with 720.

It worked on a Toshiba HD DVD set-top player? The article says it only works in the newer Macs.

Tested it myself at a Best Buy. Played in 1080i mode from the player.

Didn't even make a menu; just simple linear playback...but it worked.

Ulead also just announced a new version of DVD Movie Factory that supports both HD DVD and Blu-Ray authoring/burning.

Too bad it doesn't support 24p encoding. I had to capture 24F material with pulldown (via SDI) and edit 29.97. Encoded as 1080i and played on a 1080p set, which did a nice job of pulldown removal so it worked out fine, but I could've had a little better quality not wasting bandwidth on pulldown frames.

Looks like you can encode 1080i h.264 also now. That'll help for sure.

1080i h.264 footage? i tried that Elton, couldnt find it in compressor, so i did it via quicktime export and DVD SP refused to take the footage when it was h.264. only MPEG 2 1080i works.

I'm not sure that DVD Movie Factory 6 doesn't support 24P.

I've fed 24P footage into DVDMF5, and it has accepted that and created a 29.97fps NTSC DVD without re-encoding, so I think it properly flagged the disk for inverse pulldown processing by the DVD player. The program doesn't let you select 24fps in the project, but if the source is 24fps, it seems to do the right thing behind the scenes anyway.

DVDSP4 appears to do this too, but so far only encodes the 1080 frame in MPEG2, which at the higher bit rates can look pretty decent.

just came across netblender

just came across netblender

Hi all

On the topic of burning HD DVD or BR - I just stumbled across Netblender at www.netblender.com - It is a browser-based app that you rent, and it has several other features that I thought were quite unique. Best of all it claims the ability to create menus and other features w/in a high def DVD of either flavor. Haven't used it yet. I'm not affiliated with it.

imo, if it does what it says it will be fantastic.

AVC-HD files on HD-DVD DVD-R?

AVC-HD files on HD-DVD DVD-R?

Can AVC-HD files, like the ones generated from the HDC-SD1, be used for an HD-DVD volume on a DVD-R without having to re-encode the files?

Question: Everytime I try this, DVDSP tells me that the video file is an "Unknown Format." I encode it just like the tutorial says and I cannot import it into the program. I have the most up-to-date version too. What am I doing wrong here?
