Ya it was hand held, I find if you use the LCD screen and hold the camera right against the top of your chest with both hands it works well to keep it pretty steady. Shooting stuff like this you have to go hand held and total run and gun style.

False. it looked like handheld bike footage. picture was ok...you were way to close to the action alot of the time i thought....ive been shooting "action sports" for years and not that hard to use a tripod and think about things like composition to get much better stuff.

its hard to focus on composition when you have 5 riders on a course at once and you you have no clue what line they are going to take next.
There is a huge difference between shooting something like this and shooting one on one with a riders when you have time to set up and shot and know exactily what they are going for.
If you have any feed back on how I could shoot an event like this better that would be great

Great run. That kid is unstoppable, huh.
I don´t think you could shoot this with a tripod alone. If you have several cameras on set yes, but not alone. In one shot you turn more than 360 degrees. There wouldn´t be room in the court for you running wild around a tripod.
But as JZalutsky says you are a bit tight on the action sometimes. I actually think the spot you were on is not very good. I would prefer a spot on the side and shoot from there and THEN you could easily use a tripod and give it a better feel of height and distance. Standing in there it will always have to look as it does. It would be hard to make it look any different than what you did. It is a position I would only use for the slo-mo cam on a TV production though. The leading cam would be up in the stands. But not too high, so you get a feel for the airtime still.
my 2 cents

^yea, if you have to shoot like stuff get as far away as you can from a good vanatage point and slap the camera on a tripod. and with the long zoom lens you have on the hvx you can just jump around and get a lot of stuff pretty easily. I see shooting contest generally like shooting events which I hate and dont really do, but you can still do alright.

thanks for the feed back,
In years past I had shoot this event from the stands but this year the course changed and the stands were actually lower then some of the ramps that really mad then a bad spot even for the crowd watching, it was a big problem.
I wish I would have had a zoom through wide angle lens with me for this, it would have help a bit with some of the footage that was to close.
I was moving around quite a bit getting different angles. I will post a video of the highlights from the weekend when its finished.
Thanks again
JZalutsky: I watch your demo reel online and you have some really great stuff! I also really liked the motion graphics and effects in the reel.
