The Silent City, short film now online... in HD too!

Your site is down, I was wondering if you have a torrent for the 720p version, I would love to see this in HD. Thanks.

Ruairi i must say your movie looks great. I totaly understand what you have done by taking passage from a chunk literly from a movie and shot it so to speak and the great thing is because we dont know the begining middle or anything else about the film, we can leave it up to our own imagination to work out what the film is about. Some one mentioned that the skull looked fake. To be honest if thats the only thing you can pic out about the movie then there truely aint that much to pic out.
In my eyes you wount lose browny points for that.
It would be great if you could make a making of dvd for your movie.
have a look at what the guys from the ore have done.
the way i look at it is there are alot of people who would like to know how you went about making you short, plus the revenue from the dvd sales could pay the rent lol or fund a future short.
I would seriousely consider that. and it will also help get your name out there.

Ruairi,
I second that from "Darkeyesuk2000" Like I said before, I have worked on 3d max before, but I would love to know how you integrated it into your film so flawlessly. If there was a tutorial, and a how to DVD, I would purchase it in a heart beat. You can even distribute it on RocketIndie. I'm sure people want to see how you did it.

Also dont forget that 3d max is the biggest 3d program out there, so alot of people will buy your dvd just to know how to get to that level of quality, You could even go and make it one better and make it a tutorial dvd with sample video files and models so people could have a go at recreating the look them selves. Iam telling you mate you would make alot of residual income and put a smile on alot peoples faces, thats what the movie industry is about.

Ide lay down dough in a heartbeat too. I want to see how the buildings and environments were made above all. The quality I saw in the detail I saw it in coming from one person really made me wonder. I know there are shortcuts to alot of what you did im sure but idk what they are lol.

Nice.

Story: I actually liked this little snap shot in time, to me it was intriguing seeing this segment of the soldiers lives unfold before us, making us assume what was going on; who these people are, what year this was, even what location (which was answered for me at the end when the monster/robot/spirit/thing goes under the arch). I'm usually a fan of a beginning middle and end, but I enjoyed this a lot and wanted it to be a tv series, first episode down... now on to the next. I think there could have been a little more done to establish the characters, not back story necessarily, but just some more dialogue or banter or any kind of interaction between the soldiers to make you feel a little more for the characters (possible one finds an old picture of a family and he looks it it for a second and then sets it down, just a little more character development would have been nice in my opinion) .

Editing: I liked 99 percent of the editing, but there was a few times it stuck out to me. The one I can remember off the top of my head was right after the mine explosion when the soldier dropped the cigarette, it felt jumpy, for lack of a better word.

Special Effects: Amazing, wow! One then I didn't get was when there was the high flying crane shot over the city you gave it the fish-eyed look. Now was this to show that his was also a monster/robot/thing like the one that plows through the car at the end. flying away from the dying soldiers (mine area)? I felt there was two monster/robot/things, one that took out the gas mask character and then one that flew away from the mine... maybe I missed something, if there is only suppose to be one, maybe take away the fish eye look on the one, or if there is suppose to be two, maybe make one look different than the other... reverse fish eye?, color scheme?, not sure.

Great job though, you created an amazing world, with great costumes, amazing special effects and I loved the dead sniper gag... I wish I could say you also created interesting characters but like I said, I think more time needed to be spent with them. Maybe your other parts to the story would have done that. But all in all, my issues with it are minor quibbles and grips, if this would have been a feature length with the exact content, you would have gotten another grip on story, but the concept/context works great for a short film.

Hello, Ruairí Robinson here (I made Fifty Percent Grey and directed those Caveman Milk ads some of you might have seen)

I've decided to put my new live action short film "The Silent City" online. I wrote/directed/storyboarded and edited it myself, and also did 95% of the visual effects. It features Don Wycherley, Garvan McGrath, and Cillian Murphy - an actor some of you might have heard of... The film has endured a painful birth, and I hope it was worth it!

It appears to have done the trick though, because I've got an agent, and a manager in Hollywood now, and started being sent movie scripts from the studios for me to direct (about 50 scripts in the last couple of months!). Which is... well exactly what I've always wanted, so I'm a happy camper right now. Despite the fact that I can't afford to pay my rent (so I'm "grounded")

So here it is, in both standard def and high def formats:

(720x306 quicktime - 106MB)

(1280x545 quicktime - 378MB)

I loved your movie. Its really good. Great compositions, nice story, good visual effects.

Congratulations.

I realize I am late to the party, but just wanted to add how impressed I was with the look of this film. The atmosphere was phenomenal.

Just played this for a group of friends tonight. I am stunned by how beautiful these frames are. The VFX breakdown is really amazing too. Anybody who watches this should get the breakdown for sure.

Congrats.

Silent City is my favourite short ever posted here. It simply blew me away.

I loved AKIRA!!
He has some big shoes to fill but I think he'll do an awesome job.

Good luck, Ruairi!

Not that you'll need it.

Cheers,

Mike

:B I gave him a hard time about story (as usual), but picture quality and everything else was amazing.

Now he'll get a full blown narrative to tackle. Never know WHO'S on DVXuser these days.

You weren't the only one. Quite a few Members jumped on him. :D

Well, I loved it. :)

He created a dark and amazing atmosphere without really saying much of anything. The ending was perfect.
Left me wanting more and thinking about it well after watching it.

Kudos to him and best of luck!

I mean.... the guy has been nominated for an Oscar before!

Cheers,

Mike
