Lowest Price HVX from authorized dealer?

*This was originally posted in the "Where to buy a HVX" thread, but it seemed like it wasn't going to be noticed so I'm re-posting as a new thread*

I'm about to drop some moolah for an HVX and possibly a FS-100. Right now I'm leaning towards studio-exchange.com, an authorized dealer with a sub-$5000 New HVX (I want to get that rebate). I'm not sure about shipping (their ebay store is pretty pricey when it comes to shipping, but the store doesn't list it) but I will be buying from wherever is the cheapest authroized dealer I can find obviously. Anyone seen anything less than 4995 from an authorized dealer for a NEW HVX? Or even a place where you can get a good deal on a FS-100/HVX package? Tomorrow's the big day :)

thanks

I bought mine from EAR. They got it to me fast and they were awesome to deal with - 5K even.

Whatever you do, make sure you buy from out of state to avoid the taxes...if for no other reason than general principal.

I guess your "general principal" ignores the legal ramification of tax evasion. i.e. many states (including Ca) have statues requiring "out of state" purchases to be 'declared' on the state tax return.

If your state doesn't require that declaration, then great. Otherwise ....... ???

Studio-Exchange. They have p2 store for 995! I was tempted... but not when I could get a macbook and p2/pci adapter for that price, and 32GB cards ren't available yet.

Jimmy, I hope no one gets audited, but they do. I have been audited, and it was quite the ordeal...very stressful. Elsewhere on this site, I briefly explained the story.

Basically, sales tax on a $5000 camera is about $400 to $450 depending on the state.

As an example, when I was audited, there was about $600 of sales tax if I remember correctly that I didn't pay for the 2000 year. When I was audited in 2003, the $600 had grown to about $1800 or so...including the late fees, penalties, and interest.

Luckily for me, I was audited after only 3 years, and not 5 or 6.

So, I don't make the laws, but I like to share this story with people so that they know what can and does happen.

Imagine purchasing $100,000 of gear for your business and not paying, say, $8000 in use tax...after only 3 years, that might grow to maybe $20,000 or $25,000...not a good thing. Such mistakes could put you out of business.

BTW, by not paying *sales* tax in another state, you must pay your own state what is called the *use* tax...on a good note, it's a tiny bit cheaper...I think about 7.5% vs. 8.1%.

Me? I bought my camera in Februrary, and I'm paying the use tax this month.

No worries for me.

---------

oh, btw...if you are buying your camera for *personal* use and used a *personal* card or even perhaps a money order or something that wasn't traceable, then sure, there is no way that any authorities would know...however, many people write such purchases off for their *business*...wouldn't be a good thing to show a $5000 write-off on your taxes and then not pay the use tax.

peace.

Not the IRS. The Arizona Dept of Revenue.

I own a small computer consulting company. I advertised in the phone book. I received a phone call one day (I remember very clearly where I was...like when JFK got shot...ha).

The guy asked, "do you guys install network cabling?". I said, 'sure'. Hoping to get a big cabling job!

He said, "well, my name is so and so, and I'm an auditor with the AZ Dept of Revenue and going thru the phone book and our records show that you don't have a Reseller's License/Sales Tax Privilege License....so, we need to talk."

I had only been in business for a short time, and I didn't know that I was required to collect sales tax when I installed cabling....as a side note, a $2000 cabling job obviously consists of both material *and* labor...so, they don't require me to collect sales tax on the entire $2000, only 65% of the $2000...I guess the 65% is an arbitrary amount assuming that the client shouldn't have to pay sales tax on the 35% that might have been labor. Interesting, huh?
One thing is guaranteed...if you ain't been audited, then you don't know such things.

So, anyway, going thru my pretty new books, they saw that I should've collected about $600 in sales tax in past jobs...I had to pay that plus another $1200 in interest, penalties, and late fees.

Keep in mind that there are probably another 1,000 ways to get audited...I just got stung when the auditor was, uh, "cold calling" you might say.

I'm VERY glad that I got audited when I did...would've put me under a few years later.

...as a final note...if you buy a product, say a $100 hard drive and pay 8.1% (or whatever) sales tax for a total of $108.10 and then resell it for, say, $150 to a client, you are absolutely 100% required to collect 8.1% sales tax on the $150 *from* the client and give it to the state...it does not matter that *you* already paid sales tax the first time...that is *your* problem. If you get a sales tax privilege license, then you won't have to pay tax from *your* vendors.

For any details, just call your own state tax dept and ask them questions...if you are paranoid (no reason to be), just call from another phone and they won't even ask for your name.

Just run your business the 100% legit way, don't waste time complaining about existing laws...just comply, and then focus on making money for your biz.

Good luck.

As another note to FilmBoy...they didn't come after me for $600...they were contacting thousands and thousands of businesses who either owed or did not owe money.

That's why they contacted me...to see *if* I owed...and I did...the next guy that they called could've owed $5 or $100,000...didn't matter to them.

Quantity of money isn't their primary concern...compliance is.
