Question about Vertical Detail Level

I've been lurking for awhile now - I have to say that this is absolutely one of the best, most informative forums I've ever seen - about any subject!

There is one thing about scene setups I haven't figured out yet, and I was hoping somebody could help me:

What does "Vertical Detail Level" do? Is it a detail setting separate from the general "Detail Level" setting, or does it establish a ratio between vertical and horizontal sharpening? If I want less sharpening overall, should I only reduce the general "Detail Level" setting, or both?

It's a separate setting that only affects sharpening on horizontal lines, vertically.

If you want to reduce overall detail level you'd be looking at setting both functions lower.

Wow - that was quick - thanks Barry.

I want to do all my sharpening in post - so I'm setting Detail level to -7. Does it make sense to set Vertical Detail level to -7 as well? Are the degrees of sharpening for these settings about equal? If I plan to use Vegas Sharpening or Unsharp Mask, for example, will the level of sharpening end up approximately matching on vertical and horizontal planes if I set both detail levels to -7?

They're not equal, the regular detail level is a lot more pronounced than the v-detail-level. But there's no active softening going on, so if you want the least-electronically-enhanced image you should set them both to -7.

I'm not clear on the Detail and V.Detail settings. Am I to assume that Detail then is only effecting horizontal detail? It doesn't seem that way, rather that Detail effects H and V, so I'm still confused about the relationship between these two settings.
