128GB!! WOW! Thats about an hour and and a half of recording time at 1080p! I don't even know how much that is at 720p, but probably a lot! Thanks for the reply Barry, and sorry about all of the exclamation points.:cheesy:

Well, honestly you are not even able to do the math for 1080p...!
I was not really good on this, but i guess 128 minutes are more than 2 hours...woooowwww! :2vrolijk_08:

Long gone and not used in just 2 years? I wouldn't be so confident in that statement. I bought my VX-1000 in late 1996, 5 years later it was still in demand, 10 years later it still shot video as good as most of the current DV models and sold for over $1000.

P2 is a technology that is replacing several tape based ones and is being adopted by major news networks. It will eventually be replaced, like everyting else, but not in two years.

100% true, My VX2000 was around for about 5 years and still sold for 1k when I bought my HVX.

Finally nobody will swap the cards anymore (nor tape nor Firestore etc). With, let´s say, four or five 128GB cards you can almost shoot a complete feature. There will be the data inside de camera and the transferred data in the editing suit. Call it P2, harddrive or any other form of storage. What finally counts is the format of the data and the transfer rate. This, in a certain way, makes P2 very futureproof.

128 gig cards will be amazing. The only thing that sucks is, the 1000 we paid for 8 gigers, will be GONE, once the cheaper cards hit. We probably wont even be able to sell them for 250$ once the 32's come out.

And for that matter P2 will probably be gone...
Too much going on in the IT front. Too bad the HVX
is not upgradable like the RED will be.

You're kidding, right?

The DVX is still selling very well, and how many years has it been out now? And it doesn't even have native 16:9 ccd's.

Not only that, but you are more likely to see the increase in cards sizes, and the decrease in card prices make the HVX more popular over the next couple of years, since card sizes and prices are the main reason people are complaining about in terms of the HVX. Becuase they aren't complaining about a tapeless workflow, or the DVCPRO HD codec at a sub 10k price point.

And, don't forget the HVX is not the only p2 cam out there. There are new, and excellent cams on the way that utilize p2. And, as also already stated (here and elsewhere), major networks are signing p2 exclusive deals.

I would say all of these developments are going to help keep the HVX around for the forseeable future.

Later,
Jason

I second Jason. I will be using my HVX probably for the next 5-7 years at least, as long as I possibly can. As p2 gets cheaper it will make it an even better solution. I love the idea of a 128gb P2 card, much better than an HDD.

On a full day of shooting, many will still need a stack of 128GB cards in order to replace the use of tapes.

Or a 128gb card and a cheap 16gb-32gb (by the time the 128gb comes out they will be very cheap) as a "temp card" while dumping the 128gb card to a laptop or HDD.

Why? 128GB cards would give you five hours of 720/24pN. With two cards in-camera you could shoot for 10 hours uninterrupted.

Hopefully your free 8GB card will come soon, so you can actually use the system and quit speculating wildly about things you don't fully understand yet.

Tapes.... absolutely suck now that I'm an HVX ower and in 10 days, I'll be a 1 year owner. I did a gig yesterday with multiple DV cams going IMAG and now I have 16 tapes to capture. THAT SUCKS and if we were doing it HD... I'd just be importing and letting the comp do that deal...

Hate having to go back to that technology... seems so primative now

I second that, i am doing documentary stuff, and you can imagine that the limitation of space/time sucks, but i guess i will be quite happy when i have about two 32GB cards and maybe swap with an extra 8GB card...!

But i can tell you that it works well already with 8GB cards, and dude, i had dozens of days with 6 4GB cards, and even that worked, would have been perfect(with even less cards) when we have had the time or the additional technician to download the footage in the mean time...!

I cant tell you what happens when the 128GB cards realy come out, i guess some people will forget about downloading and do it directly from the cards..not for me, but who knows..!

What i intended to say is, that the way you see your footage immedialty via P2, and that you can can erase bad clips straight away, 1 hour of P2 footage is not comparable to one hour DV-footage...!

Plus you are coming back to the film-feeling, where you couldnt record each and every pan and zoom out and whatever...that helps your Cutter, trust me..!

So on your planet, how long is a day exactly? Or are 'the many' planning to just stack up the P2 cards so it looks as though they have a big pile of tapes and only use 2 of the P2 cards?

Amen. I hate doing anything now where i'm not using the p2 technology. i hate scanning through those tapes now looking for the good takes.

absurd statement on many levels. long gone? p2, gone? like completely gone? FOX and all them other channels would have firesale all their gear or just burn it, this is unlikely, prolly impossible.

i could go on but what's the point...

I've had my 8GB card for a few weeks now. I love using it for practice, but I would rarely use it for anything else.

10 hours of 720/24PN footage is pretty damn good. But what if people want 1080i?

And please don't insult me. I know you're the #1 supporter of Panasonic and P2 workflow, but I'm talking about the practicality here. When using tape, you can shoot as many hours as you want as long as you have enough tapes. You can go on a travel shoot, bring a stack of tapes and shoot like crazy.

In order to make shooting as easy with P2, you would need the GB equivalent of what all those tapes can hold. So the only way to do that is to either have a stack of high capacity P2 cards, or have enough to get through a day and then off load all the footage onto another device at the end so the process can begin again the next day. But then, you'd need some serious storage for offloading.

So let me ask you. If I want to shoot 1080i footage, 5 hours of footage per day over 3 days (or more), no offloading device, how can I get all this footage without a stack of high capacity cards?

I agree. I think P2 is fantastic, but they're not as practical as tape use on long shoots.
