HVX out to HDV cam?

We can't afford the P2 cards, don't want the 8 minute time limit, or the Firestore problems, but recognize all this will change in time, so we don't want to buy another camera. We both agree we prefer the Panasonic look. My partner is asking why don't we buy the HVX and use the output jacks from it and plug into an HDV camcorder. Just using the HVX as a head, for now, and recording to the inferior HDV format. I'm pretty sure this won't work but I'm too lazy to research why, and pretty sure my friend/partner won't believe it, if it just comes from me.

Thanks for helping with my desperate and stupid question.

You are correct, it won't work, at least not in high definition. That's because the HDV camera won't know what to do with the DVCProHD data.

You could record standard definition DV25 that way, but why buy two high definition camera to record one DV25 stream?

I'm sure he is talking about the component jacks, in which case there shouldn't be a difference in the native codec of the camera. (In my mind it should work?)

I can't think of an HDV camera that has component video input. I'm not saying such a thing doesn't exist, but it would surprise me and I can't think of one.

To the OP: sell the HDV camera and buy a second 8GB card.

This is possible, but, you would need a pro HDV VTR deck, such as JVC BR-HD50 with analog component HD inputs to capture the correct format and framerates such as 24 or 60.. But, on the plus side, if you used this workflow, you could capture via HDMI out on the JVC deck to bypass the Long GOP compression chip.. The result would be better than HDV quality.. but not p2.. for the money, you might as well p2.. prices coming down soon. No consumer HDV equipment will be able to do what you are asking..

Still won't work. There is no HDV product on the market that has any sort of HD input (other than firewire, and that requires the footage to already have been converted to HDV/MPEG-2). The BR-HD50 doesn't have it, no Sony deck has it, and no camcorder has it.

You can't get there from here. You'd be much better off to just get a FireStore; it's half the cost of a deck and it'd record the native DVCPRO-HD data stream and there'd be no compromise to the footage.
