J.P. Bankes-Mercer Directors Reel 7.5 (NEW)

WOW... you've got some REALLY great footage there. Very creative, original, good camera movement, good acting, intriguing all around.

My only critique would be this: it's too long.

The shots linger a LOT and I think maybe you could hold onto this one, but also re-cut it to make a shorter version. Like 30 seconds short.

Take all of the strongest shots in this cut, trim them down, and blow through them as quickly as you can while still getting the message across. Shorter is better, in my opinion.

On another note, why have I not seen any the films/shorts in this reel? Do you have your work posted somewhere where I can take a look?

Also, what steadicam was used? the steadicam shots looked particularly good. Was this ALL dvx? straight DVX, right?

Very Beatles-meets-iggypop-meets-emo-meets-montypython-meets-clockworkorange-meets-germancabaret

I liked it :)

Actually what I really liked about it was the pacing between the image and the visual. Also, there's a certain mysterious element to the whole thing, it kept me watching because I wanted to see what came next.

Good work. Massive improvement over the last attempt

yeah, I agree JP, your work is really cool on this and it shows such a unique POV on the world. It did feel long to me, but I cannot tell if that's just because I have been watching a lot of reels lately.

How did you decide what length to make it, or did you?

STEADICAM=Master series handled by the superb Jason Torbitt
DVX=Straight
All stuff was dvx apart from the river shots, that was DigiBeta

Cheers brown, thanks for the kind words.

Been following alot of reels myself 3min/3.30 seems to be about right for a reel.

Thanks again.

Dynamite images. Beautiful lighting. Great eye.

Feels more like of Director of Photography reel though.

As a directors reel it doesn't show me if you can tell a story or put a sequence together.

If your aim is music videos with beautiful images it rocks.

Just my 2 cents.

Cheers Ric, I Dp'd alot of the stuff on there. I also do aim for music videos, maybe I'm on the right path. Thanks again.

Hello,
Just stumbled across this thread - thanks for the 'props' big fella!

Some good memories in that reel. Nice job, it's cut together well. There's so much more that could go in there too - it's a nice snapshot / window on your work.

Good stuff
J.
