square pupils in talents eyes?

Hi folks

Quick query.

I have just started using a dvx100b and I noticed that while using shooting in 25p and then exproting avi video, the pupils in the eyes of talent are rectangular and not round.

I appreciate this may have to do with digital pixels but on tight shots its very noticeable and the more contrast added in edit the more noticeable it is - anything I should be doing to remedy/ avoid this?

Any advice appreciated :-)

Thanks alot m28

Maybe your talent are all weird squidgy space aliens masquerading as human beings, and their square pupils are the only visible sign of their otherworldly identity.

He could use that... something good to add to the story...

Yeah if I noticed my talent having rectangular pupils I would change my whole script around. Unless they also have rectangular heads, in which case there must be some extremely odd shift in the pixel dimensions.

Post that frame grab!

Hi

I am still trying to figure source of problem whether it is in Vegas at the editing point or just PC monitor issue when colour contrast is ramped up.

I do not have an output to a field monitor to check so am relying on dual monitors.

Camera is set to 25p mode, z99 ( full zoom) fstop 2.8 if that helps.

Here is screen grab - http://www.gareth-davies.co.uk/dvx/screen02.jpg

I am calling it the "goat eyes" effect :-)

Gestalt/perception?

Or is it a reflection of the background of the room, ie, black wall there?

EDIT: Also, look at the talent eye's at say 400%, not so square, more issues with eye colour changes, imo. I think it is our mind/perception.

Thanks

There is no black wall or anything reflecting - but Christopher, I think you are right when you you say zoom in and check there because the pupils become more curved.

So it does seem to be about a colour effect / pixels getting compressed creating the illusion of rectangles in the eyes.

That puts my mind at rest anyway - thanks for your input folks

Reminds me of a movie quote... "I came here to kick ass and chew bubble gum. And I just ran out of bubble gum."

Name that movie...

It's the shape of your light source.. A soft box..If the softbox was closer to him, it would bend in the corners even more, as determined by the curve of his lens/pupil..

Yeah it certainly looks like a soft-box blocking reflections in the eye, giving the pupils a slightly rectangular look.

They Live.

How close was the camera?

It looks to me that it is a reflection and the reflection is the blackness of the front of a DVX. The box in the eyes looks like it is about a 4x3 ratio. If you are fairly close to the face of your actor and shooting straight on at him you are going to see the reflection of the lens hood and lens which is the exact shape that I see in his eyes.
