end product for your HVX footage?

It's only recently that I could even think about the idea of affording a move from my DVX100 to the HVX...but I don't know if it makes sense.

From Barry's "Who's Using..." sticky, I assume that most people's footage is destined for either b'cast or film. Most of my work is destined for DVD...getting it on PBS is a lovely dream....and I wonder if there's any value in future-proofing a once-in-a-lifetime project I'm about to start by recording it in HD and working about the distribution medium later.

Thanks.

Future proofing

Future proofing

Hey,

Like Ned said future proofing your projects is the way to go. I have several shows that I have sitting around that were acquired on DV and broadcast on PBS if only the HVX200/P2 technology was in my hands 6 to 7 years ago.... I remember when the Panasonic reps flew out from CA and tried to sell me on one of the DVCpro50 2/3" models that I demoed for a month. a) it shot like DVpro 25 and 50 and that was it.... b.) Like 30,000k. Man with the HVX200/P2 combo wicked..... So glad I passed on the early camera.

So now with the HVX I am future proofing all my programs and shooting stock footage thats future proof.

If an HVX does the trick for most of us, what do you gain by spending $35,000 or so for one of those full-size, shoulder mounted HD monsters? Not that I ever would or could consider it.

My bad! I meant that I passed on the early DVCpro50 camera like 7 years ago to make my current HD camera purchase the HVX200. Which I use now for commercials, stock footage etc... So I do not own the HD shoulder monster..

Because the 2/3 inch chips and a $20,000.00 or more lens will get you even better pictures plain and simple.
Not needed for every person or project, but definitely better.

Ted,

Your are correct. I think I was using a fugi 20X HD lens with the demo I briefly had in my possession and man was that glass nice. Someday soon I am going to own a 2/3 HD monster with 40x lens and shoot stuff for Nat Geo in my travels... wake me up nap time is over.

JK

Yeah you gotta have that 2/3 ich chip camera for Discovery or Nat. Geographic or they won't even consider it.

And 2/3 = what? $15K plus? So that means, as far as those b'casters are concerned, you're no better off with an HVX than a DVX.

Is it the same deal with PBS? Man, I'm probably priced out of those markets forever.

Jim, where are your commercials shown? Do you sell to stations that have lower tech requirements?

Just trying to understand marketing opps for HVX footage that you wouldn't have with a DVX.

commercial for superbowl/regional

commercial for superbowl/regional

I have just ventured into the commercial market now that I beginning to better understand this camera. I shot a local commercial for the superbowl and have received great reviews from lots of people. It was for a local athletic club shot in 720pn and then down converted in compressor using advanced>anamorphic dv. I was able to use the variable frame rate to get the true slow mo look I need to help tell the story. So s far as National Geographic goes i just submitted my reel to the director of acquisition in DC she is going to give me a thumbs up or down sometime this next week. All the footage I submitted was from 2 cameras. 1 reel was all SD stuff accumulated from my travels all over the world from the last 2 years. the 2nd reel was everything I had in the can to the tune of 6 minutes TRT of HD shot on the HVX200. So it will be exciting to see what their response is. Lately i have been shooting all 1080 30p to be released on my website before NAB. Those clips are for Immediate download at www.10hd.com I just returned from Argentina and have preparing those and other clips for my site. Just waiting on my cousin to put the clips up. So dont laugh when you only see a few clips up for sale. There are aat least 50 clips that should be posted any day.

My idea is to sell all 10sec HD clips. Eventually I want to have other memebers from here or anyone that wants to sell their footage to have the opportunity to sell their acquisition online through my store. Just an idea.

Rip,

Not true. i am living proof. I worked on a ALL SD project shot with 1 XL1s, 1 DVCAM PD100 and a Beta SP for National Geographic ultimate explorer " Women Smoke jumpers." They never said boo.. Only the wow factor on the finished project. So don't believe the hype.

Jim, what did you have to do about ugrading your editing hardware for HD? New computer? More RAM? RAID drive? I imagine the cost of the camera is just the beginning. Suddenly my new project looks very low budget to me!

PD,

I running FCP studio on a dual 2Ghz G5, 4gigs of RAM 23" cinema display a couple of 22" Diamond pro 2060u Mitsubishi monitors. I have been using the G-raid drives with about 2 terrabytes of storage, Also I have a 17" 1.67Ghz powerbook for field editing with 2 G-Raid mini's @ 100 gigs each. They are firewire 800 and are bus powered. So its easy to through them in your Back pack to dump your P2 cards to. I have used them in the Bush in Tanzania, the Yukon and as of late Argentina, No problems yet. I am considering buying a e-sata system and putting it together for around 1,800.00 to start my HD collection. 2.5 Tb system.

Not sure what to expect at NAB but hoping for a external firewire blueray burner unless one already exists. So really nothing to special but it works for me.

SO VERY TRUE.. and even now the 2/3 cams are coming down in price.. and the Red... woo hoo.. Lots to be happy about... and lots of people are pissed that there 250K acquisition and mastering systems don't hold anymore water than something 1/10th the price.. or less.

HDV to DVCproHD

HDV to DVCproHD

I have been a Canon man for quite sometime but after researching all the info on the different codecs, format options and P2 technology it was easy to pass on the canon h-1 and buy the HVX 200, although I still would use the h-1 if money wasn't an issue. I believe many people are shooting in HDV and then converting their footage to DVCproHD to work with in post... less processor intensive from what i have read.
