Hi,

We are planning to shoot our next video on the sony HVR-z1u. How does the footage from this cam work within Vegas ?

Also since it records HD resolution to normal DV tape (using the HDV codec) what kind of space do these files occupy when they are captured from within vegas and what file type do they come in as ? Will vegas even capture from this cam ?

This footage will work fine.

Just capture and drag into the time line. Vegas will work with it natively (as of version 7)

It will take up the same amount of space as normal DV would (13gigs an hour)

Thank God. The idiot who showed me the cam today said. It will hog 1 gb per sec of video. What a dork ? and that guy is a govt certified DFT (diploma in film technology). He also said that we can capture the video in as uncompressed and that each frame of the video would be about 6 mb. Can you give me a realistic picture of how i should work with this cam ?

When I look at architect studio... I can't see any 1080 formats in presets... Only 720... Does that mean you can't burn 1080?

FutureDVX > Burn in 1080 ? No. DVDARCH is a dvd authoring application conforming to dvd standards. A NTSC dvd doesnt accept more than 720x480 pixels. Period. BUT you can burn a 1080p or interlaced file to a dvd .....but as a file. Draw and drop in windows. Or use nero. So you will basically have a 1080 or technically if you prefer, an even larger resolution file of your choice on that dvd. As long as it fits onto the dvd. Now the down side is you wont be able to play this a on a dvd player. Since its just a data dvd containing a HD resolution file. But u can play this file from this dvd on a computer thats quite robust enough to handle HD resolutions. And many decent pcs out there can do that.

By the way Architect studio is not the pro version of dvd arch. dvd arcitect 4 is the latest version which comes with the VEGAS + DVD package.

OTHER MEMBERS .....can someone share if you have worked with the sony z1u and vegas ?

Come on guys i have to decide in a day or 2 if im going to shoot with the Sony z1. So please tell me how to capture files into my system via vegas 7 ? What size can i expect these files to be ?

I have worked with FX1 footage. The capture process is the same, except you use Vegas's internal capture program. Then, it takes up the same amount of file space as DV.

I have a fairly screaming machine, so I never found much of a need to use an intermediate codec.

Hello David...Thanks for the immediate response.

We are planning to shoot on SONY Z1U.
Its file output they say is 1440x1080i. (Im confused.. how can that be since this is a native widescreen cam,,,so shouldnt the x resolution be 1920 ??)

I have more questions but ill go slow here so it wil be helpful for others too.

The pixel aspect ratio is 1.333. 1920 is what you would have with square pixels. If you multiply 1440 by 1.333, you get 1920.

Oh so the HDV codec records with a 1.333 PAR by default ?

Now for the capture process ,,, i use the same sony capture menu to get the video in ? Any settings to give ? That will avoid the interlacing lines being obvious etc ? And after these settings what type of video file (what extension) will we have on the HDD ? What will the file size be approx per hour of footage ?

1080 HDV is 1.333. 720p HDV is 1.000.

Instead of Sony Vidcap, you'll use the internal capture program -- look at the choices when click the capture button. It's pretty much the same process as in Vidcap, only it appears within Vegas itself.

There really are no settings; like DV, you're just capturing what's on the tape in a bit-for-bit transfer. The files will be *.m2t files.

As for avoiding interlace lines, well, you're using interlaced footage, so there's not much you can do about that. All you can do is work in a progressive project, with the deinterlace method set to "interpolate fields," but you're sacrificing up to half your resolution that way.

Oh god...then what is my best option ?? My final out is going to be WMV 1280x720p. And played off a computer to a 720p native dlp projector.

Vegas should be able to convert to 720p when you do your final render. I believe you can even edit at 1440x1080 format and render to 720p on the final output.I presumeing you are not going to use architect dvd at all and just rendering it out as a WMV file. correct?

David > My best option to bring this video into my timeline. Vegas 7 has an inbuilt intermediate or something right ? Cineform ? How do i use this ? And will a machine with core 2 duo E6600 2.4 ghz + 2 gb ram do well for this project ?

Smithy > Yes im rendering out into wmv 1280x720 so that the pixels are mapped straight into the destination device (Projector 1280x720p). I will play the video from a laptop.

I think im pretty ok with how to render out. My complication is ive never worked with this hdv format before. Only DV. Thats why we are assembling a seperate computer just for this project. My only quam is that i shudnt be stuck with footage that will drive me up the wall from the timeline. Im looking at doing some intensive compositing, Chroma, Animated Bezier Masking etc. Plz advise accordingly.

David > would you suggest i go with a dual core 3.4 ghz (pentium d) rather than a core 2 duo 2.4 ghz (conroe) (with this particular project in mind ??)

You want the fastest processor possible, so, whichver is faster.

I've never used an intermediate with HDV. But then, I don't work with very much HDV.

Make sure to run the 3.4 and keep your computer that you are building dedicated just for post work. Don't even put it on the internet access unless you really need to. I have 3 computers..and my production machine isn't even close to a internet connection. Any upgrades can be downloaded and installed manually after it is checked for any viruses before it is used. In addition...Since I only installed the XP PRO SP2 basic package without all the latest updates...I found that my rig doesn't have problems due to Micro$oft interfering with my work.

Yes Smithy,
Thats as usual. Because i never connect 3d workstations etc to the net. In fact i dont even install antivirus on them. Only a few appliactions which are intended for media work. Norton slows the system down a lot by monitoring and scanning each and every internal process. So NO av solution. No Internet. Etc. Please tell me,, you really feel the dual core 3.4 which came out before the Core 2 duo 2.4 is a better option ???
