Divine Ink Tattoos Reality Series With The HVX200

Didn't have time to watch it properly but I can say you have way too much headroom nearly all the time.
Will watch again with more feeback,

What do you mean "way too much head room"? Thanks for watching.

Hey Mike...

It's Karlon I hope things didn't fall apart with us (haven't heard from you) I like the closeups of the shots you had in the tattoo place, like of the person's back Anyway I guess the other guy was saying that the shot had too much space between the top of the frame and where ther person's head was placed (head room) I don't really see it but everyone is different. In any case that's something that can be looked at in future footage or you could just use a wide aspect ratio 16:9 so that you can crop the top and bottom so as to remove the excess space you will also get those 2 black spaces on the top and bottom.

By the way careful with the pixel sizing of your footage it seems a bit warped like
it needs to be a bit wider.

Can't really hear the 2nd person at all with the machine going. I suggest a lavaliere next time.

Your aspect ratio is definitely off on the web clip.

it has potential...
the webclip 4x3, but shot in 16x9, may want to fix that, that will also fix your headroom issue i'm sure...

furthermore, watch miami ink or whatever the one on A&E is, and get some ideas of how they showcase the location of a tat studio. tatoo studios are interesting places, lots of interesting machines and art. get some shots of it. it helps move along the interviews too, try not to just show a talking head whenever possible.
other then that, seems like a lot of good TV could go down at this place... i would watch it...

was the hard thrash music playing in the background on a stereo or was that just an added audio track.... because with that and the ink gun and the room noise, I could barely make out what that dude was saying..... now, that can be interesting if done in a really kind of "verite" way but here its not.... and it just doesnt work

as others have said, there are aspect ratio and composition issues, as well as b-roll issues and whatnot..... this thing needs a lot of work but there could be some potential I suppose.... tattoo reality tv shows are hawt right now baby! hawt baby! (slick hollywood jewish producer voice)

Some of you said (Your aspect ratio is definitely off on the web clip) and (the webclip 4x3, but shot in 16x9, may want to fix that) Please tell me what would be the best way to fix that? I'm not here to fool or impress anyone! I will admit I'm new to this whole thing. That's where you guys come in. I'd rather you all let me know all faults then gas my head up. I'll tell you all what I did and you guys could tell me where I went wrong. I shot the clips in DVCPRO HD 720p 24p Firestore FS-100 16x9. I rendered it out as a *.mp4 H.264 640x480. As far as the audio and the head room, there is a reason why I had to shoot like that. I'll talk more about that in another post. All feed back and comments are more than welcome. You guys help make me look better. Karlon I got you're voice mails. I'm not mad at you. I've just been working hard. I''ll call you soon.

720 x 480/486..... 640 is why it looks off

but technical aspects aside, you have madd headroom that needs to be fixed..... the composition just doesnt look good.... I dunno man, try getting more creative with your framing.... break rules (but do it for a reason... if that makes sense??)

good luck

your talents face should NOT be in the dead center of the screen with a chest up shot.

If you were trying to cover up her boobs that were overly large and looking like they were just about to escape, then zoom in to a medium close up.

here are examples of proper framing of a human being. You can get more artistic and creative if you want, but for the vanilla shots if you stick to something like this people will think you shoot amazing footage.

Medium shot (note the HEAD is not dead center of the screen)

MEDIUM CLOSE UP (note head still not in the center of the screen

EXTREME CLOSE UP

All of these shots (although just a boring shot of a kid) have solid composition

If you follow this link you will see that the only time it is appropriate to show that much headroom is WHEN YOU ARE SHOWING THE WEATHER IN THE SKY ABOVE THE POINT OF INTEREST OF THE SHOT.

The point of interest is either a person or an object or a building in all the examples

I won't comment about the screen size. You are using an image size that is more for 4x3 than 16x9. Please fix that. Your image should look more like a movie screen (not a TV screen). I agree about the head room and framing, but you can't fix that now. The audio is a little rough, too, but I can live with these issues it if the story is good.

These types of shows need good pacing (quick editing). Right now you have talking heads, then a montage of B-Roll at the end. It would be better if you had cutaways during the interviews (close ups of the person being worked on, different angles to keep things moving, etc...). I would use the montage you have at the end by breaking it up and putting it between the interviews. These brief montages would act as transitions. Interviews, when the subject matter changes, breathe better with short montage transitions between them. Back to back interviews only work if subjects are talking about the same subject. You can also break up talking heads with b-roll nat pops (for example: A person walks into the place and everyone says hello). Then you go back to the talking head. Perhaps the talking head/person being interviewed talks about what it is like meeting a client for the first time.

These are not rules, just suggestions. Good luck! I find these people interesting. You may be on to something!

Thank you for the information on the head room. Since I film in 720p what would be a good final render for the web other than 320x240? I think that size is to small. Thanks

You have given me some of the best advice. Thank you for taking the time out to write your review. Now I know what I have to do.
