DEMO REEL - Marco Aslan (recently updated)

Very pretty work. I'm starting to be able to pick out HVX footage from a mile away. HVX seems to have a very distinctive golden touch to it. I really like the reel.

the black and gray shots about 75% through looked really good. What'd you use to soften it all up? After effects I hope, because that's my jam.

It's hard to see the directing when the whole this is a music video. It looks like a DP reel, it's all visual. Otherwise it's very nice.

Cool reel, I really liked the very last 2 shots, they had a nice atmosphere.

It's hard to get a feel for you as a director without seeing a finshed scene. How do you stage scenes? What kind of performances and vocals do you like? Do you like fast or slow pacing? What kind of lensing and camera work do you use? How clearly can you tell a story?

All that we know from this demo reel is that you have somehow been involved in a number of different shooting situations.

Why is it that when putting together a reel, everyone throws away any dialogue or production sound/foley? Those audio tracks are literally half of the 'physicality' of what you see on screen. You're shooting yourself in the foot when you get rid of that audio, you are dramatically cutting down the amount of communication that is happening in the piece. Try putting the dialogue or some production audio back in. You can still have the song playing in the BG. For example, when we see Paris, put in some traffic noises. For the shot in the end, add the lightning noises back in. You will see that the images seem to have more 'life' and depth this way. It's actually confusing for the human brain NOT to have this audio there. The last thing you want to do as an editor or director is confuse people and/or tell them that you can't communicate properly.

I agree with you, that's why I said: "This is a demo reel mainly to catch the attention.. it's 2 minutes long. After the beginning sequence - "trailer" look there will be a short clip of one my movies (Morphology, or Phantasmagoria which is not there yet)."

I think you need to rework the ending, it seems to just suddenly cut off, and it kills the reel.

You'll catch my attention when I can see that you stage, select shots and direct actors in an interesting way. Otherwise I'm just sitting there waiting for two minutes impatiently waiting for the real event to happen. Why waste time?

is it because English is my fourth language?

Here check out my first edit of the Reel - Notice at the end that there is actually a short clip... which I removed because I want to update it with my newest film.

Honestly, I think that this demo reel doesn't show anything about you. if you want toget a real sense of a filmmaker's talent, you need to have a reel that features more dutch angles. Dutch angles are totally where it's at, man, and I didn't see ANY. What gives? I just sat there waiting for something to happen, but no dutch angles at all. Come on, man.
