HELICOPTER SHOOT - My First -- Some Results

For those interested, the P2 Store did not work well in the cold tempuraters... and neither did the FS-100. I had to place the P2 Store on the engine of a snowmobile to warm it up to operational temps.

This is a perfect example of why P2 was created; solid-state media that has such a greater range of operating tempuratures. It's why the P2 system was selected for shoots in places like Alaska, Antartica and even a Discovery program shot in Greenland about icebergs.

Robert, the P2 store didn't actually work well for me in the cold. I don't know if it's an isolated insident, but the P2 store would not work in sub 0 temperatures. In fahrenheit, it wasn't working 'sub 32'. I think I will contact Panasonic and ask some questions just to be sure it's not an isolated insident.

Craig,

Although the Firestore and P2 Store have completely different missions and purposes they are both external HDD's in an enclosure, which is why they didn't perform well in the cold. Large server rooms such as used by telcom, data warehousers and large databanks keep the hardware in "cold rooms" where the ambient temps are lower than 50 degrees, however HDD's dont do well in sub-freezing weather mainly because the sealed bearings the internal spindles weren't designed for mil-spec or harsh environment usage.

The ironic thing however, is that in the "dark ages" of HDD's where some would seize in normal operating temps, it was common practice to put the seized drive in an sealed wrapper and put into a freezer, which would cause the internal spindle to shrink slightly from the ultra cold temp and sometimes free the seized bearing just long enough to transfer off the required data.

P2 cards by contrast, are solid-state media and are not subject to the same physical limitations of spinning disc media, whether it's magnetic or optical which is why the P2 cards themselves will work consistently and reliably in the environment you were shooting in, but the P2 Store and Firestore did not.

There is a company (can't mention who) that is designing a solid-state mass storage device specifically for data-transfer applications in harsh environments specifically to address this and other harsh-environment problems. This exact scenario that you've described is one of the applications this new product will be made for. My guess is that sometime this summer both the company and the product will make a public announcement about it's creation.

I finished my first helicopter shoot and it was an amazing experience!!! I'll post the odd clip for you to view. Let me know your thoughts.

Glad to hear it went so well. Unfortunately my QuickTime can only play the sound. Tried downloading updates and nothing helped. QT 6.5.
Maybe I'll try when I get to the studio tomorrow. I'm off to ride my horse now.

Thanks For The Advice

I want to thank everyone who kindly lent adivce in a previous post for helicopter shoots. It allowed me to properly preapare and get a good idea of what to expect. If anyone ever has any questions concerning helicopter shoots, please drop me a line.

Cheers,

Got a link to the thread? I'd be interested in reading what suggestions they gave you.

One good thing I've found about keeping equipment warm in cold weather is those chemical "heat packs" hunters use to keep their hands warm.

Yea, I remember that thread, I even left a comment on there that was removed, and then the thread was closed... guess someone didn't think it was funny what I said, it was only a joke but I think someone has issues with helicopters.:(

You need to update to Quicktime 7. It is the only thing that will play h.264's. I run into this explanation everytime I send someone a file.
I have even gone as far as emailing the link for the download for both windows and mac. I had one client call me back and say "well I installed both the windows and mac version and neither one works". Quicktime 7........

How hard was it to smooth out the shots in Shake?

I've got shake sitting on a shelf collecting dust... and a few shots I've deamed un-usable because of a little booble here or there...

also I am thinking ahead... i've put off doing some helicopter work because i couldnt afford to rent a Tyler mount.... this may change all that.

The smooth cam is easy to use in Shake. You will loose some of your picture so you have to make sure your focus is dead on. The smooth cam filter works really well but can distort some of the image. It's worth it though to run your footage through the filter... because you end up saving footage you deemed unworthy. I would budget for a stabilizer next time and use it in conjunction with Shake. My budget for this project didnt' allow me to use a stabilizer so Shake really helped.

Cheers.

If you guys need something to smooth out shots iStabilize is an awsome app, only for mac though, but its incredibly fast and easy to use and gets amazing results. I never even knew there was such an application.

http://www.pixlock.com/

I used this on my short film for crane shots, dolly shots, steadicam shots, it works with
any kind of footage. I believe it works the same as shake as it tracks points in the whole scene and then offsets to get a steady result. Its great because it works with a moving camera. This saved me on my short and even some VFX work. It would of been such a pain to track the shots I did without this. It was about $50 when I bought it.

WOW, that is an amazing little app- very impressive. I just downloaded it, and I'm going to try it out. I was thinking about getting Shake, but this little app will save me several hundered dollars if it can to 1080p HD footage.

Thanks!
