desperate! choppy (drop frame) footage coming out of AfterEffects!!!? help

hey, team of clever people.

I have footage im editing in AE, it was shot on HD, but im editing it for 4:3.
The footage is smooth in the work bar when i pre-render. BUT when as soon as i export it, it come out 'choppy' like its dropped frames? the motion is not smooth at all? im desperate for help here... what am i doing not doing?

What format are you exporting to? double check your export settings, would be the first thing I'd check.
 
hey brown, im exporting to avi, DV PAL... strange thing is if i use the 'make movie' extension, i.e the render que. it comes out fine? and if i export .mov its fine too.....? i dont understand it. all the settings in the export seem ok
